I bought a new Cobra 17.5 degree utility iron off a dealer on ebay.
It was a KBS Tour C Steel Stuff 120.

Two things.

The shaft it came with is the same length as my 4 iron in my standard set.  I thought driving irons like this came with something longer?
It doesn't seem to be getting any further than my 4 iron.  Probably by large due to it being 17.5 and having the same shaft length as my 4.

Did I get ripped off, or is this a normal thing?
Cos at this moment in time, I just paid £150 for something that does exactly what I have already.

That’s essentially a 2i or jacked (strong) 3i loft, so I’d definitely want it to be longer in both length and distance hit than my 4i. Most OEM standard 4i length is 38.5” these days. So I’d say I’d w

From what it looks like, it's a 4 iron. A 17.5* 4 iron, but still listed as a 4. I would expect the same shaft as a 4, seeing it's a 4.

If you have no issues hitting your existing 4, what did you expect to gain?

I don't really get what you're talking about left hack?

Its a 17.5 degree driving iron which can go as low as 16 degrees, which is going no further than my 20.5 degree 4 iron.
Even if I turn it down to 16 degrees, nothing seems to happen and its certainly not going the extra distance it should.

I looked at LOADS of reviews before buying this and my clubhead speed matched or exceed many of them and they were all getting 250+  My 4 iron goes about 225-235 total.
I just got back from the course having hit it for an hour next to my 4 iron and I can't separate the performance and I got plenty of speed to get the most of this club.

Something is wrong.  There is no way a 4 iron at 20.5 degree goes the same distance as a 16 degree iron from someone whose hitting it close to 100 MPH.  I have enough to get to something good out of such a club and it ain't happening.

Again, if I’m buying what is essentially a 2i replacement, I’m looking at the length of my other irons and making sure the club I’m ordering is the appropriate length to blend into my set. If you would have simply asked how long the club was you were interested in you would have found out it was the same length as your 4i and you wouldn’t have purchased it. Always figure out specs and find out exactly what you need before ordering! Live and learn.

Since when do LOWER LOFTED CLUBS COME IN THE SAME LENGTH AS HIGHER LOFTED ONES?
I was NOT ordering cobra one length.  I should not need to ask.

its well known that driving iron shafts ARE longer than standard 4 irons shafts.

It’s frickin eBay! Who knows! 😂

that’s why you ALWAYS ask questions and never assume.

When I googled "Cobra utility 17.5" it came back with "utility 4 iron". My 3 iron is 21*, so a 17.5* 4 is just crazy.

That being said, I agree that for me, a 17.5 is my 2 iron. My 2 iron is 40.5 length. I would think that at 17.5* even with 4 iron length would at least go 10-15 yards further than a 20* 4 iron.

My 4 iron is 24* but I can only hit it 190. 🤣

Guy has 49,5111 feedback at 100% and sells everything golf.
But yeah, I'm starting to get that "I been ripped off feeling" 😞

No way this club is responding right ,I spend a lot of time hitting balls on gc2 sim, I know what 4.5 degrees of loft should do to a shot and the fact that is not doing it is weird.  Especially with the shot data I have seen other youtubers get.

I wrote to the guy anyway saying whats up so will update this if I find anything else in case it helps others, in the meantime I will try and book a sim session on GC2 and get some hard data.

Cobra site lists the 2i utility iron with steel at 39.75” standard length. Is that the length of yours? If so you got exactly what you ordered. If it’s shorter there is an issue.

Thanks according to callaway, my standard size callaway steelhead xr should be the following.  I put them side by side and they look identical but will have to confirm.

#4 20.5° RH / LH 38.875" 60.5° 0.200 D0 D2

Are you sure your Callaways are standard length? Throw a tape measure on each club and see what they are. The main issue is the length of the new 17.5°. If it’s 39.75” it’s right. And if your 4i is 39.75” it’s definitely longer than standard.

If your club is 39.75" by what ever method Cobra uses to measure length then you did not get ripped off as that is the length Cobra lists for that club on the website. There's no real point in the comparison to your Callaway 4 iron as Cobra and Callaway may use a different methodology for measuring length.

This can be said about pretty much everybody. As if a standard length is too much to ask, how about a standard method of measurement for our non standard lengths?

This. It is irresponsible to jump straight to "i've been ripped off" just because you had the wrong expectations. Plus, you don't even know how long these clubs actually are, you're just making assumptions that you need to confirm with measurements. Also being frustrated because you aren't getting the same numbers as some youtubers is not a metric for whether or not you've been ripped off. Can you please link the eBay listing?

Utility irons do not inherently have longer shafts. Most driving irons are designed with longer head length and lower mass to make them easier to launch.....Lengthening the shaft for the sole purpose of distance would be counter intuitive, taking a club that was designed to be easier to hit or launch, and making it harder to hit and launch consistently. Personally I like the term "utility iron" over driving iron, because a lot of people seem to think that a driving iron, implies some magical driver-like distance increase that just simply is not there.

And as others have said...it is not the seller's responsibility to know what is in your bag, or to try to match something to your set or gaps. If you had a full set of Cobra's you would see that their 19 degree irons in a lot of their retail "stock" sets are 39.25" long. So it would stand to reason that their utility iron that can play from 16°-19° would only be one half inch longer at 39.75". Cobra does not care if that gap matches clubs from another manufacturer...nor should they(because it matches theirs).

This is definitely a strange thread. Way to many variables to be thinking you should be hitting it like you saw in the reviews you watched lol. I have yet to see a review that has a shorter distance than the previous years model regardless of the club type (especially drivers). Yet I hit each new driver I buy the same 250yd as the previous one I was playing. I guess I could claim the same thing right?

Companies can measure clubs in different ways which can make some longer or shorter than others. Maybe the club you got there was an error when it was built, we are human after all and people make mistakes.

As for the performance well that's part you and part the club, but that's every club and golfer out there.

So no you didn't get "shanked".

Dude! If you're gonna hang around here, you can't be rocking a driving iron with a dang steel shaft!?!? You need to get you an MMT or LA shaft in that bad boy, trim it to around 40.5" and then see what gives.

It's okay to buy stiff off ebay, but you gotta trick it up some. Don't EVER stay stock!
