New Mack Made Putter - Build in Progress Thread

Hey Guys,

 

Been a long time since I've been on the forums. I've decided to commission a putter with Josey at Mack Made. I've been following him for a long time and have admired his understated design cues and engravings. I've started the process today and have already paid my deposit. Demand is at an all time high, so I'm going to put in a timeline of when in general things have happened throughout the process.

 

1. 5/7/21: Decide to commission putter with Mack Made. Deposit is paid and creation process begins.
2. 5/7/21: We've decided on a couple of options for the putter: Wallace model but with a flat sole instead of the tri-sole. Standard face milling (produces muted/soft feel). Swan Bent Flow Neck (making it face balanced).
3. 5/10/21: The design process continues. We've modified the Wallace model, probably to the point that it shouldn't really be called the Wallace anymore. We've have been discussing weighting/design options all morning. I'm excited by what I am seeing so far. Very personal process; feels like I'm his only customer which I know isn't the case. Post 2 below will be updated with some design images. (please excuse the quality, some of them are screen grabs from a video on my phone). The neck will be different but it was added to simulate the amount of weight the neck will be in the final design.
4. 5/17/21: Spoke to Josey about what the next steps would look like. He said at this point he'll be adding the custom touches to the 3D render which I will then be able to approve/re-work. Machining comes after that. I'm writing this update on 6/1/21 but the last time we made contact was 5/17/21 so that's what I'm tagging this entry as. 

 

I know it's early, but so far, I'm very happy with the process! I've talked putters with him before so I sort of knew what to expect, but I'm still impressed. My deposit will yield me 3D rendered image. This image will be reviewed and adjusted to ensure my vision for the putter is brought to life. Here is the brief, general description I gave him. We went into more details, so this is just more to serve as a way to let you guys know what general direction the putter will be heading. If anyone has questions or comments please feel free to ask. 

 

EDIT: The design on the sole will most likely be changing; not because of lack of ability on MackMade's part but we agreed perhaps a more understated look would age better. You'll see what we come up with in the later design images.

 

a 34", 355g-ish Scotty Squareback-ish type of shape, face balanced, maybe a bit longer heel to toe. If you have something already made up I may be willing to work with what you have on hand

 

Figure I'd spill out some more ideas, as far as the bumpers I was thinking Mack on the left, Made on the right in a script-ish type font. On the sole, I'm thinking I want to try to do a engraving of my dogs face (Dorothy) and "THE GOAT" (we call her this, short for Billy Goat because she'll eat anything), also in the same type of script font that's used on the bumpers. Single line on the flange. I am kinda thinking no paint fill anywhere except the sightline which would be in white.

 

I'm thinking raw stainless for the material, kind of a matte finish from up top but maybe a polished sole to make the engraving/font pop

Will be cool to see the updates and the finished product. So he does take a deposit or is it full payment upfront?

Let's see, paid today, so he should work on it this weekend, next day air it out on Monday, you should see it on Tuesday by 10:30am.

The deposit ended up being about 25% of the total cost of the putter. Balance is due when the putter is complete.

LOL now THAT would be stellar! I know he works quickly but I expressed to him that time is of no issue on this one. I plan on making this uniquely for me and I'll keep it forever. Plus I doubt too many folks would be stoked to have a putter with my dog on it haha

He took a 1/3 deposit on mine then the remaining 2/3 upon completion, but that was a while ago. 
 

Working with Josey was definitely one of the better custom experiences I’ve had with a boutique putter maker. I recommend him.

Glad to hear! Yeah he seems the most down to earth out of what I've seen. Looking forward to seeing it come to life.

 

EDIT: I think the deposit probably remained the same and price in total went up a bit.

Put my deposit down first week of April, he had a delay a few weeks ago I think his shop got struck by lightning

Jeeze that's faster than the 12 weeks he was at not too long ago. Should have went with a MackMade then.

Alright y'all. The putter has been milled and the neck is in the process of being welded on. I've been slammed with work so I'll give a more detailed update once I get the putter in hand. Including some pictures so you guys can get an idea of where we're heading. Made several design changes along the way, all of which Josey was more than willing to accommodate.

Totally blown away by the putter. I'll do a more in depth review and a post in the main putter forum for my new putter day. Enjoy
