Plastic liners to the top of the cup

Recommended Posts

What is the rationale for these plastic cup liners being inserted in the hole?  They are installed and reach the top of the hole.

They adversely affect play.  Any firmly struck putt that catches the edge will ride the rim and not fall in the hole.  Effectively narrowing the diameter of the hole.  They also seem to serve no viable purpose.

Played golf for years without such nonsense.

It's worth noting that this is at a world class resort with a membership but I've also seen it elsewhere.

They actually positively impact play. They keep the lip firm and from caving in. So in reality you have been making putts you otherwise should have missed because people are pounding, pushing and caving the lips in which will make a putt drop that with a clean crisp edge would lip/roll out

There was a separate thread on this a little while back. Research shows they have no adverse effects on whether a putt goes in or not (when installed correctly). The bottom of the liner should be flush with the top of the cup and about 1/4 - 1/2 inch below the putting surface. Whoever installed that one obviously screwed it up.

Courses use them because they allow the cup edges to stay sharper for longer, thus allowing you to make more putts. Plus they help increase visibility (similar to courses using white paint for the top of the cups).

I have had a lot of putts pop out of the hole due to the plastic insert being too high. If the putt goes in the middle of the hole it hits the top of the insert and it pops out. Our local muni has 2 courses and this only happens on one of the nines. Troon just took over so I hope they get all the inserts at regulation depth. Happens a lot on short putts that have some speed to stay online and go right in the middle. It’s very frustrating.

Going back to the logic of it, I noticed cup edges getting damaged when we could not touch the flagsticks. So many more rounds and especially after the noodles went away, the cups were really damaged easily.
