Putter fitting

Recommended Posts

I recently had a putter fitting on a SAM putt lab at club champion. With the information that was given I have a tendency to leave the face slightly open at impact (makes sense when I miss short putts it’s always right side). I also seemed to add a little loft (which also makes sense because I rarely hit lag putts long). Unfortunately the kid wasn’t too knowledgeable and wasn’t too much help so I had to recommend which putters to try. With this information I’m assuming I’d need something more face balanced (current putter is an Evnroll er8 which has about 25 degrees for hang roughly), less loft, and a more blade

style since mallets have weight in the back and I will only launch it even higher. Let me know your thoughts and recommendations. Cheers guys!

I would try something with more toe hang and see what happens. A face balanced set up will only leave you with an open face at impact and a face balanced putter. You need to be closing the toe to square the face at impact. Try an old heel shafted mid mallet or something with a short slant neck like a Zing and see if that helps in squaring the face at impact.

I'd call CC and ask for another fitting since the fitter didn't quite give you what you paid for.

I’m under the impression that a putter with toe hang has more weight in the toe and makes it more difficult to close the face compared to a face balanced.

There isn't more weight in the toe the shaft axis is closer to the heel which means the COG rotates around that, a head where the shaft axis is through the COG to make it "face balanced".

OP you should definitely call CC and get them to correct the error. Their customer service is great. If nothing else they can look at your SAM report and give you real recommendations.

Have you tried putting with only your lag hand (RH for RH putter)? Personally, I tend to add loft and 'slice' putts when my left hand gets too active.

So more toe hang (toe flow) means that it is easier to close putter face? In that case, the OP's problem would get worse with a face balanced putter. Correct?

As a side question, would less shaft offset help close the putter face? I would assume NO since GI/SGI irons have significant offset than pure blades.

It's all so confusing.

Potentially, it all depends on their stroke and mechanics, nothing is set in stone with that.

Offset shouldn't have any play with toe hang, maybe some serious offset but no one really uses that.

It is confusing and that's kinda why fitting is huge. Yeah those guides are helpful but people are putting their stroke into certain categories just to play certain putters.

My daughter did a putter fitting at CC and was very happy. Only issue is that they don't correct the errors in your stroke, they just give you a putter to counter act it. So basically you are putting a band aid on the wound. I took her to see a putting instructor and he changed somethings up in her set up. This changed her path and at that point, her old putter fitting was worthless. Now she has a putter that doesn't fit her because she corrected the problems in her stroke. I hope this makes sense.

This X100. Putter fittings for anyone shy of PGA Tour level ability are a waste of time and money in my opinion. Buying a new driver isn't going to magically fix your slice just like buying a new putter isn't going to keep you from missing putts to the right.

Take the money you were planning to spend on a new putter and get some lessons. Or at the very lest purchase a few putting training aids to help your stroke.

But if you figure out why your putts are going to the right you can work on fixing that, you can compensate on the course but you cannot lie on a fitting or a lesson on a monitor.

Toe hang may actually make the issue of leaving the face open worse

https://blog.odysseygolf.com/hoselguide/

For golfers who tend to miss putts to the right (toe hang helps close the face at impact if you have a tendency to leave it open).

Correct for most people. There can be exceptions but for most people more toe hang makes the putter harder to square at impact.

I can tell you this, there are no absolutes when it comes to putting. What can work for one does not work for the other due to eyesight, eye dominance, set up, etc...... The first thing I would do is to see which putter you aim correctly. Go to someone who has a lasar and check which design/shape helps you aim corectly. From there, see which putter helps you start your putts online.  Just so you know, I also have an ER8 putter and I do like it, but I do tend to miss right with it occasionally.

I went in for a putter fitting lesson the other day..

They made a few changes with my set up and what not and told me to come back in a few months for a fitting as doing a fitting now would have been a waste
