just got 3 SM8 wedges from vokey and they feel, play, and look wrong. (Updated)

I ordered them with s400s at stock swingweights (d3 on 50, d5 on 56 and 60).  The steps on the shafts dont' match up (about a 1/4" or more further from towards the grip end) than my previous wedges (sm7 and sm6s) or the stock wedges in the golf shop.  The shaft band was missing on 2 of them.  They feel WAY heavy to me so i'm going to check the sw tonight/tomorrow.  They all fly higher than my previous wedges especially the 50*.  (all the same bounce/loft i've used previously).  I've never had an issue with titleist orders before and i've bought vokeys for 20 years.  The rep told our pro that the shaft stepping was correct when I mentioned they felt odd swinging them in the shop.  Took them out on the course this weekend and they performed terribly for me.  I really have to work hard to flight them down.  lie angle seems fine.

my questions are:

1) Shouldn't the steps of the shafts be the same?  did they give me some soft stepped shafts perhaps?

2) What would you do?  Send them back?

Anyone else have an issue like this?

(Updated later in the thread, issues solved)

the shaft steps sounds pretty off to me. If you ordered the same shaft that comes stock, the step pattern should match the stock sm8's.

Weighting wise I can tell you the SM8's are different than the 6/7. The CG change in their design has an effect on the ball flight for me. I noticed a higher trajectory. The SM7's were very low, and spinny. I found the SM8's to have a similar spin rate but a higher overall flight.

I'm also suspicious of the shaft issue there. Actually more curious about the lack of a sticker. WTH?

Anyhow, I stuck with my SM6 set after purchasing an SM8 600 that should've been spec-for-spec replacement for my SM6 (60.10-S). I never could feel comfortable with the SM8. Felt heavy in the head like past Cleveland CG models I've experienced. Also felt like the S-Grind was a smidge more bouncy but that could've been me.

Can't speak to the shafts but I'll join the chorus in saying SM8's have a different feel at impact and different ball flight than earlier (SM7, SM6) Vokeys. I replaced one of my worn-out SM7's with an SM8 and instantly felt like it was different somehow than the other two in my set. I actually went and found and new-old-stock SM7 of the same spec and replaced the SM8. Wasn't a fan although I'm sure over time I'd get used to it.

I have both s400 and the stock s200 in sm6/sm7.  the stepping matches on all of them exactly.  I'm glad i'm not crazy.  lol

I can confirm that the steps on my SM8 60.10-S are ~0.25" off (above) where they are on the SM6 60.10-S.

The SM8 is a downgrade IMO. I tried a few of them and got weird launch, they look funny (like they have strange offset or something?), head balance just felt off. Not sure. Anyways back to old models and all good.

Totally agree with this. The balance and look is totally off. Went from RTX4 -> SM8 -> Zipcores.

Sounds like a rushed job, it’s not like Titleist to make a mistake like that. All the lead times for the OEM’s seem to keep being pushed back.

yeah, the rep says they are correct.  i'm going to continue to give them a shot and see if they'll work.  I guess I only compared them to sm7s.  I still can't figure out the ball flight issues.

I'm curious if they did this to affect ball flight. Could be wrong but the greater the gap between the clubhead and the first step would increase ball flight.

I noticed the same thing when I brought out several sm8 wedges to test out on the course. I own sm7s and love the grinds I have in my 54 and 60 but when I hit the sm8s with same loft and grind the ball flight just looked funny to me. Kinda floaty and knuckly but had a ridiculous amount of spin on them, they just seemed like they went nowhere.

I am playing Titleist wedges for the first time.  I was playing the Ping Glide 2.0 wedges before.  These feel harder than the Pings and the ball flight is higher, but the performance overall is pretty good.

The hosel is longer on the SM8 than the previous SM7/SM6.  Was told this was one of the changes made when added weight inside head instead of on flange.   It throws off the look to my eye and also gave different feel.  Switched back to SM7’s.

I believe they are high launch, high spin wedges. I don't mind it because most of my approach wedges are knockdowns. I believe the SM8's were an overcorrection from the SM7's which for me had a very low ball flight.

Update: I'm going to throw a $ taper HT in the gap wedge to test.  Thanks for all the replies as I was wondering if it was just me but apparently not completely.  I do think the switch to kbs shafts in my irons has changed my feel.  I had previously played x100/s400 but I think part of the issue is that the s400's feel odd compared to my irons.  I have the $ ht in my old gap wedge so we'll see if that helps.

  • 1 month later...

Update: The switch to the KBS $ Taper HT is a huge success.  I am hitting a lot of good wedge shots and the feel is great.  Titleist needs to offer these shafts.  they feel soft but play stiffer when I put a fuller swing on them.  I can still generate a lot of spin when needed but don't worry as much about sucking balls back off the green.  Maybe this helps someone out there with the same issue.

I believe the issue all stems from the longer hosels and the new grooves with perhaps a little bit of the changed weighting/COG stuff they did.  Now, i'm dialed in and love how they perform.  I also bent them a degree more upright than my previous set fwiw.

Have you happened to have tried the zipcores? I have sm7s rn and am looking for new wedges but don't want the higher flight/launch of the sm8s. I've heard zipcores launch pretty low. If you've tried them, are they as sm7 like as it gets for the current wedges out rn?

I have not tried the zipcores. I have SM8's and I still like them. Your technique is still the overriding factor. To each their own, but I prefer Vokey for their superior bounce/grind options. I tried the RTX4 and thought they were a little of a letdown. They made them too much of a 'players' wedge and the profile was too small.
