Launch and spin too high, it's not the equipment

Recommended Posts

What can I do swing wise to bring my launch angle and backspin numbers down with the driver?

This season I've been launching it sometimes as high as 18 or 19* and usually when that happens the backspin creeps up in the mid 3000's robbing me of distance.  I know it's not the equipment.  8.5* Sim 2 Max with x stiff  Ventus black 60.  I am playing last year's TP5X.

That combination should be producing low launch/low spin so it has to be my swing.  I bought a blast motion golf sensor and it says my attack angle is positive, so what can be causing this high launch and spin?

For reference my ball speed averages between 155 to 160 mph.

Adding dynamic loft at impact and perhaps hitting it a little below center of face.  Hitting up on a driver can be done with hands even or forward of the clubhead (no adding loft), or with the hands behind and then adding left wrist extension/dorsi-flexion before impact.  The latter will add dynamic loft and increase spin loft.

Yeah, 95%+ of the time it is a swing issue causing a dynamic loft issue, especially with this kind of setup. We'll need a face on video of the swing to be sure though.

...8.5* Sim 2 Max with x stiff  Ventus black 60... For reference my ball speed averages between 155 to 160 mph.

So in best case, given you hit the sweet spot every time, your CHS is around 100mph. With that "low" CHS, why would you want to have 8.5* and x stiff?

For sure, with the proper CHS, launch angle and hitting the sweet spot.

I bought a blast motion golf sensor and it says my attack angle is positive ...

To what extend? Are we talking +1* or +10* ?

You should check, where exactly on the clubface you hit the ball. As a reference, see https://forums.golfwrx.com/topic/960350-diy-driver-tune-up-diy-fitting/

My best guess: Your CHS is to slow for this setup and your unconscious knows this... because of this it makes you to hit too much up... + eventually not optimal impact point on club face.

As many suggested already: Post a swing of you, might reveal other aspects

I'd say be careful with the assumption his chs is too low. Not saying he might not benefit more with a different shaft but there's more to shafts now than just stiffness.

I was fitted for a low degree head and xstiff shaft myself but come in around 100mph. Keeps my distance up but lessened my high right miss

For some people the combination of playing length, shaft weight, and head weight (swing weight) can influence the dynamic loft delivered (release timing).   Sometimes going heavier with the head weight can slow it down a little and might help.  So play around with adding some lead tape to the head.

For some, trying to hit up on the ball to get/force a positive AoA can cause a high dynamic loft (hands too far behind the ball at impact).   Ideally you want to increase AoA without increasing dynamic loft and that's not the most intuitive motion.   So some are actually better off NOT trying to hit up on the ball.   Tee it lower or play around with placing the ball further back in the stance and see what happens.  They are simple things to try out and you can always go back if it doesn't work.

His clubhead speed is closer to 108 and the Ventus is a fairly soft shaft.  Pretty bold to claim his setup is way too stiff without actually knowing anything about his game

Ps to OP. Blast sensor absolutely cannot tell if you’re hitting up or down on it accurately. Wouldnt make any changes based on that

Sorry if I upset somebody here, this was not my intention. And it was not only about too stiff setup... I asked about exact * of launch angle and impact point on clubface... and of course: a video of his swing. For sure, actually there is not enough information in this thread to tell exactly what happens here and how to mitigate it, so anyone is just guessing currently.
