Taylormade P770 irons - Which shaft for a junior?

Upon advice of my 16-year old boy's coach, we started testing new irons for him.

 

He is skinny (115 lb, 5'7") with swing-speed of 98 mph, plays for the high-school and competitively.

He has a handicap of 6 and has been using Taylormade's M4 irons (Fujikura atmos 50 g shaft) with senior-flex. 

His coach recommended regular, even stiff, flex shaft.

 

After spending an hour at a club-fitting place, Taylormade p770 with KBS Max MT 85g (steel, stiff) seemed to be the best choice for him.

Unfortunately, this shaft is on back-order and most other stiff steel shaft weigh at least 105 g. We fear that they may be heavier for him and may lead to injury in the long-run.

We are now considering a stiff graphite shaft that's close to 85 g.

What is the expected shaft weight after trimming for the KBS Max MT 85g (steel, stiff)?

 

Perhaps an Aerotech Steelfiber fc90 (95g stiff, .370 tip) or fc90cw (90g stiff, .355 tip).  Does your fitter recommend anything else as a substitute?

He should not have any issue with 105g shafts.  

I can't believe he's able to play with 50g noodles.

Trimming was not mentioned, so I don't know. We were considering standard length. fc90s seem to be a good option. Thanks

105g's are still under consideration. Thanks

105 g in no way will cause injury.

 

I feel your pain though.  My 16 year old needs Xstiff Modus 120 shafts.  I can find the shafts but club manufacturers have none in stock.  Finding heads right now is difficult as well.  We are looking at just buying a stock set in stiff.  Then ordering the Modus Shafts elsewhere and then reshafting.  Will spend more money, but won't have to wait until July.  

 

Just so you know.  I don't think Taylormade has P770 heads.  They don't have the P770 even listed as an option for stock clubs.

 

We are getting a mixed set of Cobra Forged Tec (they felt much better than the P770) and the Cobra Tour.  If your kid didn't try the Forged Tec, I would strongly urge him to try them.

Thanks for the advice. We don't want to miss the summer waiting for a new set as my son will be practicing and competing a lot. Moreover, I have a 13-year old, who is eager (and ready, HI 10) to graduate from US KIds to his brother's set. So, there is a lot of pressure on me! We will try Cobra Forged Tec.

Update - Purchased TaylorMade P770 Irons 4-PW, AW NS Pro MODUS3 Tour105 Stiff RH on Ebay. Receiving these in 3-4 days, so quite excited.

They just relisted these today back onto TM.  Modus is a great shaft.  Hope you got a good price.  Someone with an AJGA membership pays 980.00 for the set.  It comes standard with the KBS shaft though.
