Help with SL irons: Standard PW-8 and SL 7-4?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

I'm currently considering building a DIY set of SL irons. I'm not entirely sure if it makes sense to do this with normal heads because of the variable weight. I think I would definatey benefit from shorter longer irons as my SS is very high and my long irons go way too high. However I was thinking of keeping my PW-8 iron in a traditional lenght and building a wedge set that matches the PW length.

I haven't played golf for a long time due to COVID restrictions and my goal is to play more consistently with my wedges and long irons (where I'm struggling ATM). I'm a scratch player but due to lack of practice I'm simply not enjoying the game very much.

I'm also looking for a 5 o 6 degree lofted driver head somewhere but have had no luck yet. In the last practice session I destroyed my last remaining r11s head (@7*) and I need to find a head to fit in a grafalloy blue X shaft.

Any advice is welcome.

Assuming you'll make all those clubs to 7 iron length then you'd need to add 7 gm of weight to the 6i, 14 gm to the 5i, 21 gm to the 4i head.   It's not impossible but generally speaking, anything more than 10 gm is considered a lot of weight to add to an iron head.

Shorter lengths can help with consistency and control in the longer irons but not sure I'd really expect it to help with a high launch problem.  And if you need that help with control it would be much easier from the build standpoint to move to 3/8" length increments.

The high launch is generally more of a dynamic loft delivery issue (not enough forward shaft lean at impact).   If you even want to call it a problem.  Lots of tour players hit very high irons - it means a softer landing.   You just need to be able to control the trajectory when the wind picks up.  But you might be more likely to get some help with that by increasing the head weight (swing weight) and maybe shaft weight then strengthening the lofts.   So get some lead tape and play around with adding it to the irons in 2gm increments.  e.g.  add 2 gm, test,  add 2 more gm, test again, etc...

P.S.  If your swing speed is really very high, then this is the wrong sub-forum.

Thanks for your reply Stuart. What iron would you keep as a standard for the 3/8" increment? I mean, should I keep my 7 iron standard size the adapt the rest accordingly?

Another thing I have been struggling with recently is my wedges. I always feel they are too short. I feel I could benefit from longer wedges, like perhaps keeping all of them the same height as the PW.

I used to be pretty consitent with my irons but since the golf course re-opened after the restrictions were removed I have struggled more than usual. I'm currently considering a change in my swing to a single plane swing to improve consistency in my strokes.

What would be the best sub-forum for this topic?

Normally the 3/8" is done to get an approximation of an MOI matched set.  In that context you start with whatever iron happens to be the favorite.  That likely means it's the club in the set with the best MOI value.   However, when length is the driving factor then that depends on at what point the clubs become too short or too long for you.   I'd suggest to find a lower end for what would be the shortest but still comfortable length for say the PW and start from that length.   You shouldn't have too much trouble making the rest of the wedges the same length as the PW.  Then go up in 3/8" increments from there (although some use a 1/4" between the PW and 9i).

The club tech forum.  This sub-forum is really for the mid and lower swing speed players  (hence the name "stiff and below").

I built my current set exactly how Stuart suggested.  I experimented with my wedges and discovered that anything less than 36 inches severally effected my short game consistency.  So I built the set starting with 36 inch LW, SW, and GW then went up in 3/8 increments to a 39 inch driving iron.

Works great for me, and yes I MOI matched and MBI matched also.
