Low torque fairway wood shaft, stiff problems

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, hoping someone can help me out here.

I purchased a japanese shaft for my 3 wood, without having ever tested it. It looked awesome and has awesome reviews. It is 68g, Stiff shaft and has a torque of 3.3, which is pretty low.

I feel there is absolutely no flexibility on the shaft. Most of my shots are hooks...when I get it right, the balls goes pretty high and straight...not great distance though. The sound is also different...it is kind of dull, not much ring to it. Must be because of the stiffness of the shaft.

The weight of this shaft if perfect for me. I guess I overlooked the torque numbers...

I use a Diamana ZF 50 Stiff as my driver shaft and love it. It is 58g and has a torque of 4.6 just so that you guys can see what I play with.

What do you guys recommed I do? Switch it?

It's not the torque numbers you overlooked but rather the longitudinal stiffness profile - which there is really no source of data to get that information.  And even if you could find it, you'd need a lot of experience with a lot of different shafts (also for which you know the numbers) for it to be useful.   So basically shaft fitting will always need to be a trial and error process.   Unfortunately there are no shortcuts.  The spec numbers just don't tell the whole story so actually testing different shafts will always be needed to determine if any shaft is a good fit or not.

As far as what to do, everyone is a bit different on how they react to specs that aren't ideal - both for weight and stiffness feel.   In general, a good fit for weight tends to be more important than for stiffness but there are plenty of exceptions to that.  The fact that you're seeing a lot of inconsistency and those periodic hooks means that the stiffer shaft is not a good fit for you.    Now a decent starting place is to use the same model shaft that you use in your driver - except just go up about 10 gm in shaft weight.

Thank you very much for your insight, Stuart. I agree with everything you said...

I’ll try and buy something used on Ebay, maybe the same model of shaft as I have in my driver, 10g up, as per your suggestion. It will really improve my chances of getting it right.

Thanks!
