Replacing double bend shaft with single bend shaft?

hammergolf

Recommended Posts

Has anyone done this? I have an ER8 that I am thinking about changing from a double bend to single bend. It seems that I align the putter better when there is less offset. I'm thinking that if I use a single shaft it will eliminate the offset and perhaps provide a touch of on set. However, I'm not sure how this could effect toe hang or the loft. Any input would be appreciated.

I would think the bore angles wouldn't match up.

They are the same diameter so it’s essentially the same shaft, just doesn’t have the second bend that adds the offset.

I think he meant the bore angle would have the putter head at an odd lie as the double bends often enter the head fairly perpendicular while a single bend doesn’t.

I read the info from Apollo and they said installed it would be 75*. So that is a little upright, but i can always have it adjusted. I'm more concerned if it effects toe hang.

What bore angle the shafts were designed to be installed in will determine the result here. The results could be close or drastically different. Just depends.

Generally speaking, putter heads designed for a double bend have a straighter bore, closer to 90 degrees. Heads designed for a single bend are more at an angle which helps account for the offset.

As someone who tinkered with this quite a bit myself I can say purchasing single and double bends shafts online, especially places like eBay, can get tough. There's a lot of little nuances with these types of shafts and often that information is not included in listings.

Unless the bore angle of the ER8 is 90 degrees, you can possibly cut a bit off the tip of the double bend. When reinstalled you will reduce the offset a bit. Might not be as much as you're looking to get though.

There aren't really many options. Generally a double bend van be changed to something like a knuckle neck to add some offset and you can set toe hang. If you want to reduce offset, the only way to really do this is to chop of some of the tip of the shaft. This will reduce offset and usually will alter toe hang.

I did exactly this to a TM Mullen 2 - replaced the original double bend shaft with a UST frequency filtered single bend. As others have mentioned, had to bend the stud quite a bit to make it work - you have to be pretty careful not to snap it. Got me to zero offset which is what I wanted but did change the toe hang to the point where it is now actually a bit toe up like the Edel torque balanced putters (although think they are very toe up from what I've heard). I'm fine with that but not everyone will be. Pics attached.

How much did you have to adjust the post? My ER8 is a bore in and not a post. But your finished putter is exactly what I’m wanting my ER8 to look like. It’s at about 20* toe hang, and if I could get it closer to face balanced it would be perfect.

That would be great. It would take the current 20* toe hang and make it pretty close to face balanced.

Was about 10*. If you've got a bore-in it could be completely different though and even with stubs the original angle can be different between different putters and different DB shafts.

I just ordered a single bend and will give it a try. Hopefully it does the trick.
