Matthew Wolff Withdrawal....

Recommended Posts

Interesting thread where people have somehow combined his poor performance + hand injury with one comment from his mom about loneliness to assuming he is a whiney spoiled sloth. With edges being so small it doesnt take much for a player to have a fallback especially with Wolffs already volatile shortgame. That being said, with his level of talent it can't be long before he figures it out and becomes a stable tour player again.

Do average tour guys get to #12 world ranking as he did last fall? He's still ranked 27th. Average tour guys don't don't get ranked that high.

Well what do you call average?

I say a ranking outside the top 15, somewhere between 20-150 on WGR means ~ avg

Give me multiple wins and 10 years inside the top 100 and I say better than most

I see statistics are not your strong suit.

He’s just saying that “ getting to top 15 “ simply means you’ve had a good short run. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re the actual top 15 player on earth.    You need to stay there for a long period of time to say that.  Like 10 year kind of long.

HIs swing has a lot of moving parts, I imagine it's tough to manage over time with tour level pressure and expectations

100%.

The folks who clamored on about him winning all these majors the next 12 years have no idea how hard it is for him to be consistent given how far his clubhead travels. Especially at his speed.

Just super hard to be consistent when you trace your clubhead path and there's so much movement.

I always figured he'd be the occasional flash in the pan kind of guy. Struggle, struggle, struggle, top 10, struggle, struggle, struggle, win.

Look at Jim Furyks swing, probably one of the most consistent ball strikers and it's all over the place.  It's actually very similar to Wolff's swing. I only say this because Wolff has always swung this way, its not like he was a GG convert like Kang.

Your point?

Can it be done? Yes.

Tune in to any pro event, PGA, Euro, LPGA, or any college event, or watch any mini tour event, or even watch players at scratch or better on your local range. That model would be 1:10000 at the elite level. Calling it "quirky" is lacking honesty.

He was a superstar on one of the best college golf programs in the country, not only his peers, but of all-time alumni. Peter Uihlein has a perfect swing and falls into the struggle-struggle-top 10-struggle camp, oh also has yet to win on Tour. You're overplaying how hard that swing is to time, and underplaying how talented he is.

There are guys losing their cards left and right on the pga tour with swings that are pleasing to the eye. Wolff has had more success than most leading up to the pga tour with his swing and his first years. I'll tell you one thing, you don't go changing what got you there.

Off the top of my head I can think of a few high level pros that have reworked their swings. Tiger, Rory, Reed… Heck, I think Tiger changed his 2 or 3x!

I considered putting a big red circle around it with a huge arrow pointing to it. I know that's important now.

(Oh, and the phrase is "tongue-in-cheek." I trust you appreciate that I say it to help you avoid embarrassment some other time in the future.)

We’ve needed correction like that in many threads.

Of course it’s not getting the grammar per say that’s important! 🤣🤣

Are there any swings not dependent on timing?

Tiger changed his swing? I had no idea, thanks for enlightening me. I’ll say it again, never change your swing that got you to the tour, minor adjustments not included.

yea, his swing was fairly “normal” before. He wanted more distance I believe

Yes, we must seperate the loosers from the winners.

We have to be careful. I was called a d*ck by the "tongue and cheek" guy. I guess he edited it later. When I was young and we had to write letters or reports on typewriters (remember those?), I was embarrassed when my boss pointed out a spelling error that was consistent throughout the document. It was not a typo, it was simple ignorance on my part. He explained that people would dismiss the content or ideas in my writing if I couldn't spell. In addition, sending something to vendors or customers with errors made everyone in the company look ignorant. I thanked him and took it to heart. I didn't call him a d*ck. He was right. I was trying to teach the kid something so he wouldn't look ignorant, but it apparently triggered him. I hope he'll recover and not need counseling.

Too much, too fast. Find the agent that put him in this position! Matt was overexposed from the start. The quirky covid events, advertising, etc., too much for any player, especially someone young like him. You can't just release a young man into this world that preys on the "flav of the day". Matt is an amazing talent, but needs to get away from some folks and remember what got him there in the first place. I also read that he became a Christian, so it would be nice for the guys like Webb Simpson, etc. to get hold of him and help him put things into perspective. So many temptations on tour, yes the lonliness, and the pressures of sponsors at every turn. There's still hope, but he needs to make some changes and adjustments.

LOL! That’s because he was your boss and that was his job. This is an internet golf forum and people will often type fast and free and I feel it’s a fairly casual environment. Big difference between this and your job! Also you had previously called me a dull knife for not picking up on your sarcasm. So yeah, I stick by the statement that you were indeed kinda being a d*ck. That said, It was immature and I lost my temper. Hence why I went back and changed it to just saying that you have a tendency to demean people when they make innocent mistakes on an INTERNET GOLF FORUM. “Recover and not need counseling???” 😂 I’m a 49yo man that definitely doesn’t need, or want your “life lessons.”
