Oh, I agree. Not complaining at all. I know it’s basically impossible to make the system perfect. Just pointing out that (in my opinion) there is a case where a handicap may not be quite accurate in representing the player’s ability.

Much like Aviador above, if I was trying to get my handicap low enough to qualify for something, I’d play the longer course. If I wanted it higher (who would do that?!😀), I’d play the shorter one.

I was agreeing with you.

Not just the pros use average scores as a statistic. Pretty much all amateur scratch leagues from juniors to seniors use average scores as a statistic for ranking and rating. Golfers definitely will shoot around their averages most of the time with equal amounts of scores below and above their averages. They would just need to be adjusted for the difficulty of the course. The more scores taken to average the more accurate.

Higher handicaps as well as all handicaps will still sandbag their 8 of 20. The net tournaments are loaded with guys that have a 30 index and shoot a 79. 😜

If you are playing net events where 30’s shoot 79 you are playing poorly run events.

Just saw mention on Golf Channel that they will be having coverage Monday of golf's "Longest Day", i.e. the sectional qualifying. Nice to see them get this back on their schedule. No idea how much they're actually going to show from any of the sites, but hopefully it's actual golf and not just some re-cap show of who made it.

True.

Here in CA, there are a lot of those poorly managed events.  Reason I quit playing in net events.  Even many upscale private clubs face the same problem.  The lengths tournaments committees must go to safeguard the field is troubling as it also affects how many people sign up.

Seems the more new people are bought into golf, the number of disgusting people that cheat increase.

I doubt they will actually show any golf. Too many sites to do it justice.  Just the fact they will be covering is a positive.

The Columbus qualifier on Monday is loaded. Quite a few of the top 100... Charley Hoffman, Rickie Fowler, Jason Day (not sure if he’s playing since he pulled out), Keegan Bradley, Tringale, Dahmen, etc.

when did Rory Sabbatini start claiming Slovakia as his home country ?

Sure, no way they try to get all sites covered, but the big 2 sites in Ohio will have a bunch of the pros playing, wouldn't be too tough to get some cameras in place for the 18th hole at least. And that's what I remember them doing many years ago.

And of course the lightbulb just flickered on over my head....they are doing this because they got the USGA coverage back from Fox! 🤓

That's the 36 hole sectional Monday?.

Yes, I believe that is the case. Two courses so a round at one in the morning, and then flip and play the other one in the afternoon. Springfield (about 30-40 minutes from Columbus) also has some PGA players. Richy Werenski, Troy Merritt, Jim Herman, Beau Hossler, Bo Hoag.

Columbus is played at 2 different courses, Springfield is 36 on the same course. Most i believe are played on the same course, NY plays on 2 as well

Y’all realize they’ve done this before right? Every year they cover, “golfs longest day.” They’ll periodically check scores at each location, probably have a reporter on the grounds at a few to grab sound bites from the qualifiers and near misses. But very little actual golf being shown.

Not when Fox had the USGA contract.

When golf got into the olympics I'm pretty sure.  Add him to the dozens of track athletes from Africa who now compete for middle east countries, and you have a large body of evidence that when athletes say it's "an honor to represent their country", they are just spewing pabulum.  They would much rather be in the event under another flag than be left out because too many from their own country are higher up.

Not that I disagree with their viewpoint.  Just saying, particularly when "play for your country" usually also means "you'll do it for free."

I completely forgot about the contract changing hands.  No wonder.

I stand corrected, but point still remains it has been done before and to my recollection there was never really any coverage of actual golf being played aside from maybe a couple of tee shots or holed putts or some B roll footage of guys on the range.

Yeah they can't physically move all that infrastructure just for one day of coverage.  But it is nice to see them giving this attention.  It's as dramatic a day in many ways as any on the golf calendar.  I hope the USGA doesn't go the way of the R&A and start handing out a bunch of spots at other pro tournaments rather than have qualifying.  If it's an open, have it be open!

The origin of the “U.S. Open” is that it is open to professionals, not just amateurs. Doesn’t have anything to do with how players claim a spot in the field.

In 1992 I caddied for a club pro who was paired with Tiger for a 36 hole Sectional US Open qualifying tournament. Tiger was 16 years old and seem to weigh about 145 pounds. From the par 4 and par 5 tee boxes he swung a Ping Eye 2 1-iron more often than he did driver. He hit that club ridiculously high and carried the shots approximately 260 yards. His scoring for the day was 77-75 (152) and he missed qualifying by 8 shots.  Usually Sectional qualifiers draw no spectators but he had about 2,000 people following him that day. His dad watched from a distance, never closer than about 150 yards from the group.

You don't want people around you when you smell like a Brewery at all times sweating out that Popov Vodka.
