So they're choosing convenience over picking sites that might afford them a greater chance at qualifying then. I would expect at least a few of them to spread out and try take down the potentially weaker fields at some locations. Although it might be better to choose the locations that grant the most spots

They don’t know what players are in those fields

I could be wrong, but I believe the USGA chooses how many spots each site gets based on the field strength. So Columbus has a lot more spots available because the field strength is so high. If the players were to be all spread, than the spots would be more even among the qualifying locations as well.

DANG!  Looks like Rickie is going to miss an opportunity for a playoff by a shot.  Finished at -5 this morning, and there are currently 17 guys at -6 or better for 16 spots.  Still a few players on the course with a chance to get into the mix.

Yep, some strong play on the final three holes by Pierceson Coody, an amateur that plays at Texas (grandson of Masters winner Charles Coody) will knock out Rickie Fowler, Padraig Harrington, Keegan Bradley, Jason Dufner, Brandon Hagy, Ben Taylor among a few others from the chance at moving on. I'm not sure exactly how it works, but someone from that group might have the chance at the second alternate spot? Looks like there are 17 players at -6 or better.

There will be a playoff for the final four spots, between the following.

- Jhonattan Vegas, three PGA Tour wins (2011 Bob Hope, 2016, 2017 RBC Canadian Open)
- Peter Malnati, one win on the PGA Tour (2015 Sanderson Farms) and two Korn Ferry wins.
- Tom Hoge, one Canadian Tour win.
- Cole Hammer (a) and Pierceson Coody (a), who are teammates at the University of Texas.

I would guess that most public courses either have an outdated rating or aren't really rated properly. That can go both ways also. I'm not sure what "they" value most when assessing course difficulty, but I've played courses with a lot of forced carries off the tee and on approach shots that are nightmares for most average golfers that were rated fairly benignly considering

In my experience there is a fairly robust process for course rating. I would invite you to check with your state golf association and see how they use the USGA recommendations.

He had a chip from behind the green on 18 for birdie to make the playoff in the morning dew and left it about 3 inches short. Out of his five holes left today, he had 2 birdies (one tap-in) and three tap-in pars.  His stated strategy beforehand was to minimize the big mistakes and play clean golf, and to his credit, he did that, but after the rain delay, he saw the scores and went aggressive. He hit some fantastic shots today in clutch situations.

In his last two starts, he's gone T-8 / T-11 at the PGA and Memorial on two difficult courses against two of the best fields so far this year. Both tournaments, he had one bad day that kept him out of true contention (post-Rahm WD obviously).

Phil was the inspiration for the masses, but I think Spieth's breakthrough via going back to his old/natural/original swing definitely gave Rickie a little extra confidence in his own attempt to do the same thing.

Sorry if I missed it, but you mentioned how many steps you took.  How did your boy do?

Wasn’t working for my regular. An ex pro turned AM needed a guy (I loop at woodmont in my off season)

Shot even first round and +7 second round. Ran outta gas but got to watch Pendrith and Wu qualify. Pendrith will be a well known name next season on the big tour.

Gotcha.  Yeah I'm actually surprised Pendrith has taken this long to get up there.  Serious game there.
