Thinning/pushing irons

Recommended Posts

Had the weirdest round last week. I could not stop thinning all my irons. Got worse as the irons got longer to the point where I was topping my long irons at times.

On the few occasions I didn’t thin the irons I hit a big block/push.

been fighting a pull hook at times with long irons of late so could be reverse effect?

any ideas what I might be doing to cause a thin/push? No videos for now sorry as was only 1 round but was so bad I was just keen to know what I was doing!

thanks

I’ll certainly defer to the more qualified teachers on here but I’m guessing you’re probably dragging the club inside your hands on the backswing then getting stuck on your downswing resulting in the blocked shot. The thin shots likely arise from early extension because you’re not keeping your pelvis down and turning in sync with your shoulders and around your spine. It really could be anything without seeing a video.

I have the same issue when my swing gets out of sync so to speak.  For me it's a balance issue.  I feel as though I'm almost standing up on the downswing hence changing my spine angle too much.  It's fine to change spine angle as Monte calls this early extension, but too much is detrimental.  I also incorporate the "squat move" as well for power and distance so it can get me in trouble with the low screamers as well.  You would have to ask Monte for the fix here.

The instinct when fighting a pull hook is to raise and drag the handle (holding off the release) through impact in an attempt to keep the ball from going left.

You still need to release the golf club through the ball to strike it properly and then use a small grip change or increase your body rotation to keep the ball from going left.

I’d be interested to see DTL and face on swings. Without these I’d hazard a guess at two things.

Firstly I’d expect to see you whip inside and under on the backswing, and consequently early extend on the way down.

Secondly from face on I’d expect to see your head moving away from the target significantly and then you slide to try and get back over the ball.

The second issue I see a lot stemming from people trying to weight shift. I’ve suffered with it myself thanks to one ‘instructor’ who near enough tried to coach it into my swing.

Forgetting what the swing looks like. My honest opinion is that you’ve conceptually lost how to make a swing.

I’d wager you have been to see a coach who’s tried to get you to look right at different static positions? The key is how you get there, not making it look like an old picture flick book. As soon as you then try to turn it into a dynamic movement, you end up doing the hands out club in, hips and body frozen arm waft. Infuriates me to see so many people coached or YouTube’d into hating their game like this.

If I was being really blunt, you’re not fixing your concepts without seeing a good instructor. The lessons will feel less technical concentrating on feels and pressures versus ‘putting’ the club in specific positions.

First, you need a thicker and firmer stance mat so you stand level with the ball when you practice.  The clubs you’re taking to the course are longer and flatter compared to those you practice with at home!

That is impacting your alignment on the course and your ball position.  In the video, tough to see, but your ball looks too far back in the stance for the club you’re using.   But with your practice setup your ball position aids ball first contact.

Once you get a level setup, and practice with it, you’ll see need to adjust your ball position. And the pressure shift may simply resolve itself.

arms work away from body in takeaway, disconnect from rotation, little rotation of torso and hips to left arm parallel, leads too little depth in swing via arm lift - if you rotated and shallowed from the top you'd swing out over the ball so to hit the ball you are steep with arms quickly coming out toward ball resulting in the need to stand up, stop any rotation, and quickly straighten right arm.

you at left arm parallel in backswing - at this point your sternum should be close to pointing at the camera and left knee should be working out toward  left toes and right hip going up and back toward target - arms are going to lift up from here as you do some rotation.    Essentially you are swing arms and body is doing little until too late.

so yes posture could be improved but body pivot and arm sequence needs addressing.    so lessons with a good instructor.
