Rant...

I couldn't believe this is as much of a problem as it is until I have heard at multiple courses that sunflower seeds are banned and you will be kicked off the course if they catch you with them. I am a former baseball player and have consumed my fair share of sunflower seeds and wouldn't dare spit them on the putting green if I was eating them on the course. I would never even think about even spitting on a putting green. That is simply crazy to me that someone could be so oblivious and think that spitting sunflower seeds on the putting green is okay....smh!

Eat sunflower seed if you like but don't spit them ANYWHERE on the course. Spit them and a cup and put them in the garbage where they belong. Same with cigarette butts.

I agree.  I also can not stand golfers who leave their cigarette or cigar butts on the tee box or green.  I mean how hard is it to put that s*** out in a cup full of water then into a trash can or put it out on the cart path then dump it into the proper receptical  Unbelievable.

True.  I don't mind a little hip hop though just to get my juices flowing.  I do mind if I can hear your music from 2 fairways over though.

First started playing golf in the late sixty's.  Even then we would be spitting our shells into cans (no plastic bottles in the late 60's & early 70's).  Today, it is usually an empty water bottle.  Now being old, they help me tolerate the hot days better.

I grew up in a totally different era, but now the vast majority either does not know of the damage the shells do.  Or more likely...they don't care.

Hip hop isn't music, so do you mean that you hop like a rabbit to get your heart rate up?

Sure why not.  Btw, heavy metal and death metal aren't music, it's a bunch of screaming.  I also can't stand classical music.  Puts me to sleep.  Grew up playing the piano and clarinet.  Different strokes for different strokes my friend.

Why would anyone eat sunflower seeds on a golf course? in fact why would anyone eat sunflower seeds full stop?

The same reason why MLB base players eat them. They're tasty and work great as a healthy snack.

Who?

There seeds, can you call seeds a snack? and why would you eat something that you have to then spit out?

Essentially yes.  You've never seen Mark Sanchez eat a hot dog during a foot ball(not soccer)game?  It was comical to say the least.

The same thing but also not the same thing.  Your wife's salad topping is likely roasted, shelled and maybe lightly salted.

Seeds consumed at US (maybe Canada too?) sporting events are roasted in the shell or hull and flavored.  You put a handful in your mouth and use your teeth to split the shells in half and eat the seed.  All the while tasting whatever flavor they have been dusted with.  Just salt, hot pepper, ranch, dill pickle, BBQ, etc.  You then have to do something with the shells.  You can either spit them as you go through them or, what I always did while playing, move the shells over to the opposite side of your cheek and either spit them all at one time into a cup or garbage can.

Sunflower shells on a green do suck and this is very worthy of a rant.

You got to almost have grown up playing baseball to appreciate watching it.  And I will admit the viewability of it has taken a significant downturn in the last 5-10 years.  You feel like baseball how most Americans feel about football/soccer.  Both are similar in that you seem to get longish periods of inaction and then a flurry of action that may or may not result in a goal.  I actually heard someone living in England describe football as more akin to baseball in terms of athletic output (heart rate, etc.) than other popular sports.  His contention was that there are longish periods of low action (jogging up/down the pitch) broken by very athletic plays (runs into the box or sprints up the side).

Several things in thread I have a take on:

1: Seeds are not so much a snack, but something to occupy you like gum or dip or a vessel for consuming salt.  I keep a large bag in my truck almost always and I eat them when coaching baseball.  I have never thought to bring them on the golf course because I would probably spit them on the green not thinking about it, so I avoid them all together when playing golf.

2: People who think baseball is boring generally don't have a complete understanding of the game and they don't realize things are going on when nothing is going on.

3: Music is ok if I can only hear it while in the cart

He park the bus does he?

It's just a matter of understanding in that you can have a 0-0 football match that is well played and exciting the same that you can have a 0-1 baseball game that is well played and exciting.  You can have a 3-4 version of either that is not a good representation of the game or not well-played.

Once you've come to understand the details, in football or baseball or golf, things that on the surface look rather mundane appear to the well-trained eye to be very exciting or a very well-executed play or run that was thwarted by an equally well done defensive play.

The shelled ones go bad if you leave them open.  With the shelled seeds you can leave an opened bag in the cart or truck or golf bag and they still be fine for I would say several months.  I recall eating from a bag that was left in a baseball bag from fall league the next spring.  Still good.

They are kind of like smoking or chewing on a pencil.  It is really more of something to do to occupy you, a ritual almost, than the actually seed themselves.  Sort of like chewing gum to an extent.
