How does your hybrid fly off the tee?

Recommended Posts

My simple observation is that I have the utmost confidence in my 18* 5w and 19* driving iron off the tee, while I have zero confidence in my 19* hybrid off the tee. Specifically, on non-flushed strikes, the hybrid spins up and gets me 200-205 yards while similarly poor strikes with the other clubs get the ball out 220-230.

It depends on whether I helicopter it or tomahawk it.

This guy has played a few hybrids, in his golfing life😃

My (many) hybrids launch the ball like a phocking laser-guided missile. Of course.

I tee it low, like an iron, and make the same swing as I would off of the fairway.

Depends on the type of shot I want. I can either choke down on it and sort of flop it on where I’m aiming at a high height or take a normal swing and it’ll be about 25-30 feet high with penetrating flight. I got new hybrids this year so I’m still learning them compared to my old hybrid. But just seems to be longer for now and nothing more.

Your mind is playing games on you...you should hit any club off of a tee more consistently than any shot hit off the ground simply because lie is not a factor. Hitting a shot off of a tee is the exact same as hitting it off the ground if you are orienting your low point to the same place and have the ball teed just above the level of the ground.  I think that sometimes golfers teed the ball up and then try to help the  ball in the air catching it low on the face and spinning it up as you noted.

My 17 degree G400 is a cannon. A good strike will carry 190 plus and roll out another 10-15 on the fairway. 21 degree G410 more workable and can knock it down like long iron or go for the high cut. I would get very similar distances off a lofted FW.  Off the tee the 17 degree needs swept like a wood to get the maximum performance.

Depending on the model of a 5w vs the model of a hybrid, there can certainly be variances in forgiveness, with the edge more often than not going to a 5w.  A 5w will also have a longer shaft.  These two factors can lead to 15ish yards in less-than-centered contact.

I personally love my hybrid off the tee.  There are 2-4 holes at my home course where I take hybrid off the tee.  To me it’s almost automatic in the fairway.

As others have mentioned, tee it low, focus on solid contact, and let the club do the work.

I would say the flight is the same as off the ground... assuming a well struck shot on a normal full swing. If its a nice, even tee box, I won't use a tee. If not, I tee it so that the "lie" is as if it s a nice even tee box.

It flies too high and doesn't provide me anything off the tee that I can't get by choking down on a three wood or hitting a cut with a 3i.

Mine's only redeeming quality is the ability to hit it high.  Therefore, it stays in the garage.

I have stopped trying to flight or shape my hybrid - it mostly goes high and straight for me. Not as versatile as an iron but not the worst thing either!

You may have a poor-fitting shaft in your hybrid? I feel like my hybrid is fit well for me and I only lose at most 20 yards on reasonable mis-hits. I would echo other suggestions to not tee the ball too high, as these perform better on low face contact than up high.

I don't carry a hybrid.  They have a limited value dependent on conditions.  Here in SOCA the wind can be problematic for any club that tends to lift the ball.

Not sure why anyone carries 18' 5wd, and both 19' hybrid and 19' driving iron?  But if you're not feeling the love of hybrid, then it's most likely the shaft.

My hybrid is my go to club on short par 4's.  Medium trajectory straight or with a bit of fade.  This is the first one I've really gotten along with tho.  All of my previous ones spun crazy high with wide dispersion.

Many, though certainly not all hybrids are designed to interact with the ground. If you tee it up, then address it similarly to a FW, it’s going to spin too much, launch too high, and hook.

A typical compensation is to tee it very low in the middle of your stance with your weight centered only slightly behind the ball.

I’ve learned to hit them at a medium trajectory. My 16* and 19* have slowly become very reliable options off the tee.

One thing: I prefer a slightly heavier shaft in my hybrids (not necessarily stiffer) than in my woods, or they become hook prone. This helps lower the flight, and that’s win-win for me.

Hybrid is pretty much my most reliable club off the tee, love it on short par 4s. Took me a while to learn how to hit one though.

I hit mine just like an iron. Tee height, stance, swing, etc. It’s definitely a lower trajectory than a fairway for me, but its not too low, maybe a mid-flight.

I carry a 3 metal and 2 hybrid and 21* UDI.  When I put a good swing on it, it goes straight and high.  It's my 250 club off the tee.  I like it because it there is very little roll out.  When I put a bad swing on it,  I can really hook it.  I don't think it's a good club to use into the wind.  Balloons way too much.  On windy days I will use my UDI over hybrid because it has a lower ball flight with less spin and cuts through the wind better.

My hybrid is an iron with a thyroid problem. Off the tee I treat it the same as those non-carbohydrate-challenged irons - tee it low, play it towards the middle of my stance, and STOP THINKING!&!^!%!*$!
