How does your hybrid fly off the tee?

Sometimes it gets in my head that 3 iron will be more accurate / consistent than my 19 degree hybrid, probably due to my own beliefs around hybrids being too 'hooky' and a bit of confirmation bias when I do hit one miles left

I test my dispersions fairly regularly to get a bit of a reality check then try my best to trust it on the course (😂

I have an old i20 2H with a Project X black 6.0 shaft and it is one of my favorite clubs from the tee on shorter and/or tighter par 4's.  Well struck shots normally will carry 230 with about 10 yards of rollout.  Poorly struck shots are just as any other club...  My miss tends to be a hook and, unfortunately, all hybrids tend to amplify this for me...  One thing I did with the i20 was add some lead tape to the head to get the swing weight up to a D3 which helped a bit...

I carry a 4H, and swing it like a medium iron (hit down slightly).

  • If I tee it up 1/8", I get a lower, hotter shot (usually for tight par 4).
  • If I tee it up 1/4", I get a higher, softer shot (for par 3 tee shots).

IMHO, the biggest problem with hybrids is purely a mental thing. Intuitively, we want to hit them like woods - because they sort of look like woods and have longer shafts. When you put a ball on a tee, it exaggerates this perception. But...hybrids don't work that way. You have to hit them like irons. That's the secret.

Agree with this 100%. The other thing I realized is that you can't overswing them because that's when the hook comes into play.

I have two ball flights I can achieve with my hybrid, perfect or total trash.  Some in between would be nice but I just can't seem to get any of that to work.  I take it out of the bag after a few rounds with trash shots.  Then, a few months later I remember the good shots and back in the bag it goes.  It doesn't usually take more than 2 more rounds with it in the bag to remind me why I took it out.

image.png.b6b394f841cd8f8a74fdf02b27ed458e.pngI use Pride 1.5" yellow tees for my irons and bridge clubs. For 1/4" press down

to base of tee cup taper. For 1/8", leave just the top portion of the tee

above ground.

It's easy to do if I keep a couple of short tees in my pocket and

don't have to hunt for them.

Fair enough. That method for tee height seems like it would be pretty easy to use on course. Thanks for the info.

But your courses must be in nicer shape than the goat tracks I play. No way do I have access to that sort of consistency in the tee area.

Point taken. I have to try a few on the practice range to see if I get a clean 1/4" or a bumpy 1/4" for the day.

My simple observation is that I have the utmost confidence in my 18* 5w and 19* driving iron off the tee, while I have zero confidence in my 19* hybrid off the tee. Specifically, on non-flushed strikes, the hybrid spins up and gets me 200-205 yards while similarly poor strikes with the other clubs get the ball out 220-230.

How do you approach hybrid off the tee?

What you're saying here is actually what I would *expect* as a result, all things equal.

Your 5w should fly 15-20 more than your hybrid. A degree lower and at least two inches longer in the club, and clearly better contact by your reckons.

Your driving iron, when hit well, will commonly roll out more. A hybrid, generally, is designed to fly and stop. A 19h will get you a higher ball flight when struck well comparatively, and a lot more descent angle. A DI is going to come out lower, and run. It's probably going to be less carry with the DI, but more total.

So my approach to a hybrid differs based on the two I have. One is designed to be an advancement club, and the other is a fly and stop. My 16 will get me 220-230m off the tee. It's a low shot. I play them down the left side, and they usually, but not always cut just a bit. It will cut off the deck, so I plan accordingly. This is my chickenstick shot. On most days, I could leave the driver at home and be fine. My 20 will get me 200-205m, and dead stop. Different shaft entirely, high ball, consistent distance, and replaces a 3i.

When I had the hybrid in the bag (g410 19*) I could  carry that thing 250.

but I found it had to much movement to it. So went back to the DI as a fairway finder
