When you bring the putter back, where are u looking?

Recommended Posts

When I draw the putter back my eye wants to follow the path of the putter head rather than stay on the ball. That has to be wrong. It's like watching the bat rather than the baseball or watching the hammer rather than the nail. Can someone confirm my assumption that my eye needs to stay on the ball?  Thanks

Ball. It's just like every other golf shot.

One dimple, on the top rear inside corner of the ball.

I’ve never thought of this. So thanks for ensuring I don’t make any three footers my next round.

The hole...I’m one of those guys 🤷🏻‍♂️

I do the same as you and my miss is a pull due to an outside in path. If you  find a way to fix this please let me know, it drives me crazy 🤓

Once I started using a putter with more toe hang my pull disappeared.

I watch the putter head as it moves back and then as it swing forward my head begins to swivel towards to the target

From 5 feet and in I look at the hole

The ball isn't moving!!! Honestly shouldn't be that complicated

I see a line that the sight line on my putter head follows as I don’t ‘focus’ on any specific point. I’m aware of that line and I see this imaginary line back from the ball and through the ball. My only conscious thought is to move the putter in this way at the correct speed. This comes from playing pocket billiards at international level where I used to ‘see’ a laser like line from cueball to object ball.

My take on why this works is focusing on a dimple etc makes you hit whereas being aware of a line allows you to make a motion through.

When I started using more of an arcing stroke I began watching the putter as I took it back. It was a hard habit to break but I finally started concentrating on the center of the ball and not looking at the putter. What is funny is I never talked to anyone about following the putter head during the stroke but I thought surely I was the only one that  did it. Glad to know I am not the only one now.

I set the putter about an inch behind the ball and choose a piece of grass behind the ball.  This prevents me from following not only the putter going back but the ball leaving after impact.

I'm similar to this. I will often have the putter centered and the ball closer to my forward foot which is sometimes a 3 inch gap. When I do this I'm looking at the back of the ball.

In the general direction of "down". Ball and club are "blurry". I'm not focused on anything in particular. Same as every other shot.

Have you tried almost shutting your eyes?  I got obsessed with path for awhile and found myself tracking the outside edge of the putter.  Almost shutting my eyes/slight squint until the vision goes hazy ala Sergio cured it for me and now I’m back to just looking at the line on the ball without having to squint.

Always kept my eyes on the ball to keep my body from swaying and from unwanted body movement as well.

I try to do a quiet eye focus on one dimple on the ball on the top back of the ball, but I often fail and "notice" the putterhead going back with my attention, which usually results in an unnecessary adjustment to the stroke and a miss.  Golf is hard... I might try the inch of space and look at a blade of grass, that seems like a nice idea.

Oddly with this many responses, I'm surprised to be doing something different than all of you... I must be wrong lol...

I've just started working on looking 6" ahead of the ball on my intended start line, instead of at the ball. I feel like it's helping me actually start the ball on line without focusing on what the putter is doing or trying to "aim" the ball as I stroke.

Granted, I just started doing this, so it might fall apart at any time. But it seems to be working well right now.

I'll add to my answer...

I look at the front of the ball. I found that I pull putts more if I look at the back of the ball.

After I've looked at the hole the last time I try to "defocus" from the ball so I see the ball and, I'm my peripheral vision I also see the bottom of the grip.

Anything to get my eyes 100% off the putter head...
