Deep faced drivers?

For all the PXG talk hen I started looking around I didn’t even think to look at  them!

Last month I played in a tournament and was paired with a guy that had a PXG 0211 - first time I'd actually seen one in play on a course.  He drove the ball reliably and well but the most remarkable thing was the sound.  It was the best sounding metal wood I have ever heard - by a mile.  I asked him if it was hot melted or otherwise modified and he said it was not.

Deep faced drivers encourage a sloppy swing.   Deepest face I recall recently was the slider and it was sold on a swing for the fences kinda thing.  get fast, get deep, and get sloppy, occasionally you’ll get that long slap in.

naw really though every single new driver has a deeper face than I ever had back in the day.  He said dating himself.

That’s also interesting, I thought the M2 had a really great sound!

Currently gaming a TS3 driver.  Have gamed TS4, 917D2 and 917D3 in the last few years.

917D3 is the deepest of these.  If you are comfortable hitting the middle of the face, and prefer a "tall" faced Titleist driver from the last few years, this is your huckleberry.

TS3 and 917D2 have almost exactly the same footprint.  Both are slightly less deep than the 917D3 (maybe by 1/16" measured from top to bottom of the face).

The TS4 is only 440cc and definitely has a smaller face, both top-to-bottom and left-to-right than any of the others.  Again not by much - maybe another 1/16" top-to-bottom as compared to the TS3/917D2.

Most all of the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) brand drivers are deep face designs. The Japanese consumers seem to prefer traditional-pear shaped driver heads, and (at 460CC head size) the only way to achieve that shape is by having a relatively deep face height.

@Bigjim1022: Does this driver =Look suitably Deep-Faced enough for your eyes ?

One of my golf partners has a pxg driver and it sounds amazing.  I don’t know if it is as long as my sim2 but the sound is as good as anything I have hit.

The S came stock with the Grafaloy blue, if I recall that was a quite stout shaft.

No, Grafalloy Blue was not stock.  There was one later that they offered, but not the original because it was really stiff and putting in bore-though made it like rebar.  I happen to love rebar - played original Grafalloy Blue "Stiff" flex, tipped 1", fully inserted into 905-S 9.5 bore-though hosel, CPM was I think, 273 "X" flex.  What a great club.  I used to smack the sh** out of it..

I remember the iconic Grafalloy Pro-Lite 35 being the “poop” in Titleist drivers back in the day. I had it in a few different Titleist drivers 🥰

Yep, Pro-Lite 35 (reddish/maroon color) was popular on tour too.

No suprise...that PXG TPU honey comb insert is real and acts like hutment for sound deadening. Also sounds great in the Proto+ or Gen 4 drivers.

Now that this thread has devolved mostly into a "let's remember some super tall drivers from the past", gotta throw the Cobra S 9-1 Pro D in there. That thing was awesome, deeper face was super helpful for getting a flatter ballflight back then. There is so much more internal head tech and shaft tech today where I'm not sure the super deep faces really are necessary. I'm certainly not playing one.

You have to go back a decade or so before you start to find a good number of them. Taylormade has made a lot of great ones in the past like their 500 series XD models (580 and 510). I would consider the SLDR to be their last deep face driver. Adamsgolf (RIP) made great ones back in the day in the early Redline series. King Cobra also had some comically deep faced drviers

That’s kinda what I’m wondering.  I just seem to hit deeper faced drivers better, go figure.  Maybe it’s a comfort thing.  I’ve yet to find say a Ping that I hit well.  Those seem to have shallower heads though I have not tried every ping, or even seen every one lol.

also, I had one of those Cobras, was fun to hit.
