150 yard 7 iron

Think that is great but your 7 iron could b some ones 5 iron loft wise. Not taking away anything you did but with all the different lofts these days the iron number is only useful to the user.

Prob so. Prob more like a pre-2010 6 iron, but still a personal best.

Congrats... you're making progress.

Side note; most people do NOT have a clue how far they carry the ball, much less how far it travels, regardless of club; they guess and exaggerate.  I've asked many people I play with how far they hit a given club, most are honest and say not sure, but many throw out a guess, and go looking for the ball based on the guess, only to be found by me behind where they are looking. 😛

I am 70 and all about carry and oa length of each club.  My MB 35' 7i carries about 148yds finishes about 150-153yds depending on conditions, and the ball I use.  Currently, with DASH-ProV1x hit, bounce and stick, not much run out unless greens are fast and fairways are firm and fast.

That's great.  I know distance is very fashionable right now, and I don't expect that to change anytime soon, but a 150 yard 7i is incredibly unlikely to hold you back based on your goals.  My dad is in his mid-60s, a single digit handicap, and carries his 7i about 150.  For comparison, I'm half his age, twice his handicap, and I only carry the ball about 10 yards longer per club.

I have never been hung up on distance, and don't believe most golfers are outside Golfwrx, unless they have a seriously competitive instinct.

Next weekend I am playing with a buddy that is in early 50s, and his drives have been 20-30yds past mine.  What's fun as I get more comfortable with my new driver shaft, my drives are catching up and at times, passing his.  Though he says nothing, it gets to him.  That's when he starts hitting it harder, which often means losing it right into ugly.  Of course, I am smiling 😛 on the inside...  I'll keep at it till I can't.  Have a good weekend.

Congrats on your achievement!

I've always known 150yds to be the benchmark for a 7i according to online discussions for a long time but in truth, many conditions on the course can still prevent that from happening: lies, wind, temperature, execution, elevation, sea level, etc.

Don't get discouraged when it happens. Get that 6i ready when needed.

Well, I did it. With a good coach and regular practice and play, I got where I have wanted to be for a long time now. I know 150 is a pitching wedge for lots of guys, but this is further and better than I was hitting it pre neck injury and pre getting older.

So... Anyone else in my shoes, it can get better even if you're old and hurt, and it will be fun again. Just kind of a message of encouragement and a not so humble brag! 😉

Fyi, the changes we made were pretty basic - worked hard on the grip and closing the face at impact. Then worked on path and a decent sequence. Nothing crazy, just filled some long running holes.

Congrats to you "Justsomeguy"!! A 7 iron at 150 is respectable and a great reward for the work you have put in to improve your ball striking.

As an over 60 guy who has been dealing with a significant neck injury for more than a decade, I understand the struggle with loss of distance and impact on consistency that the injury can bring from time to time. In my case I'd much rather play golf, even erratically from time to time, rather than have my neck fused from C4-T1 and not be able to play at all.

I would take a 150y 7iron all day everyday it it went that distance consistently and the direction I intend it.

Hitting a 7iron 180y left, right up and down and not making GIR regulations is meaningless in the grand scheme of things.  Embrace and when your playing partner is using his PW you smile with your 7 iron while you are putting for Birdie and he is still chunking out of the sand with his C3i wedge......

Pssssshhhhhh.........a true wxrer hits his 7 iron 200 yards.  All jokes aside, I'm old and hurt and I still enjoy getting out there and playing.  I have herniated discs in my back and my left knee has mild structural damage.  150 for 7 iron is great.  Most male golfers can only dream of hitting it that far.

150 yard shot is one of my favorite to practice. Partly because i can actually see it land(with my glasses). But also gives me a decent idea of what clubs I need to be hitting from 120-200 yards. Practice it so often that I finally broke my PW. Now it's an easy 9-iron. Replaced the PW with a 48* Vokey because I didn't care for the gap between the PW and my 52* Gap wedge.

Eventually , players figure out that irons are about distance control and not pure distance

Only if you're so good and consistent that you already have adequate distance.

If your distance control is a consistent 7i that goes 120 with 10 degrees of fade bc of bad contact (as mine was previously), it needs to be shelved.

In other news, I'm hitting the 4h basically 180 now. Couldn't be happier. I don't even care that it rolls out. Just not seeing it peel off to the right for the hundredth time tickles me pink.

These improvements haven't translated to driver distance as of yet, but none of it is as consistent as I want it to be anyway.

I'm just happy the good ones are good now instead of the best ones still being a problem.
