can a player, for example phil, play the chrome soft x LS ball and the 6° driver on thursday, and then change to a chrome supersoft ball with a 8° driver on friday?

Not a rules expert but I would expect the one ball rule to extend to the round being played, not all 72 holes.

I see two possible scenarios

 

1.  Phil holds on or actually runs away with it tomorrow, followed by the best "Phil" interview ever.  I'd love to see this, oldest major winner ever and an enjoyable silencing of all the "Phils gonna choke" morons

 

2.  Phil falters, Koepka surges for the win, gets the PGA hat trick, followed by an enjoyable silencing of all the 
Bruce" morons.

Brooks seems like he is not fully healthy based on some of these shots.  If he is not then it would be Grace/Woodland/Hideki who could give him a run tomorrow.  Hideki has sunk himself on the 5s today, had he birdied those he is probably only 2 back
