Easiest to hit Fairway wood?

Hi all,

Sorry if this topic has been discussed in the past.

I'm a high hc golfer,18-20hc. I want to have a fairway wood in my bag to attack par 5 or maybe off the tee.

My current set is iron from 7-gap wedge, and I'm using hybrid for 5 and 6hybrid.

We're in current lockdown so unfortunately I'm unable to try out any clubs here, but want to have one and ready to play when things re-open.

Ideally is 5 wood or 7 wood with higher loft and shorter shaft, I tried 3 wood before but gave up! Just need something have the most forgiving and easy to control.

Thanks in advance.

Ping max 5 wood is a great place to start.  It has a nice low profile which makes it super easy to launch and hit from the fairway.  The 425’s are really hot off the face so ball speeds are great!  Also Titleist ts2 5 wood is easy to launch and feels fantastic.

I don't know your game so take this advice as friendly as it is intended.

As an 18-20hcp, are you often in a position to attack par 5's? I'm a 13 and my drives average 250. I'll go many rounds without an opportunity to reach a par 5 in 2. Unless you are routinely hitting in the 280-300 yard range, I'd look more at keeping your 170yd and under clubs in play and really focusing on hitting EVERY green when you're in 100 and under range. THAT is what is going to help you score.

This.

Otherwise, this is just yet another tedious Wrx thread where posters note their favorite club and have nothing of relevance to say to the OP’s game.

One can be a 18 capper and hit the ball 280.  Most strokes at that cap level come from 100 yds in.

Of course you can. And you can be a 5 hcp and only drive the ball 180yds. Although I'd be big money that the majority of 18hcps that drive the ball 280, aren't in the middle of the fairway as much as a 3hcp. 😉

But back to the OP's question...

Logic says a shallower faced fairway wood will elevate the ball "easier" than a deep faced one. Start there.

Not sure why people need to always comment in a way that demeans the poster.  Not everyone plays golf for the same reasons.  Maybe it’s worth it for the op to make many double bogeys to get one chance at eagle.  Not everyone only cares about score and people enjoy playing differently.  If he wants a fairway wood then so what.
what fairway wood probably doesn’t matter a ton.  Cant go wrong with ping.  Sim max is easy to hit.  Lots of good options.

Depends on what “easy to hit” means for you and how you’re missing the ball with the club. If you’re cutting down a fairway shaft then you essentially have a hybrid with a different shaped head. Weight of the shaft is another factor, you might be more consistent with something heavier. Or not.

fwiw I am a fan of Cobra fairways and hybrids, mostly because I hit them off the deck and find the rails a big plus in dealing with the turf. I didn’t hit Ping G400 fairways nearly as well, ymmv.

Oh, and there’s this dirty little secret . . .

For most high cappers, a fairway wood is the most difficult club to hit well.

So, OP, you’ll get lots of advice on what others think are easy to hit fairways but you may buy one and be sorely disappointed. Caveat emptor!

On what planet is that a secret?

Insert Humble Brag: I’m at 17 HC snd barely drive it 210 yards, maybe 220 on a good one.  So I hit a lot of FW into greens.   Last year at Whistling Straits on the 2nd hole par 5 I asked for my 5w.  I could tell the caddy was not liking the idea.  But I hit it about 180 high snd down the middle.  After about 4 holes of that.   He said. Don’t take this the wrong way.  But it is very rare to see a 17 cap hit FW as solid as you do.  I told him, as short as I am.  I have to.

BTW. It was G410.  So yes I agree they are the easiest to hit.

I doubt you will find significant differences between Ping, Callaway, TM., etc. You  might find  a personal favorite if you tried all of them, but they all know the same stuff about club design and manufacturing.

Haha lots of interesting comments on here, appreciate all your comments guys.

I will wait for our store re-open here and try some of them, especially Ping, lots of recommendations from here.

and Yes I’m currently taking lessons, from scratch newbie never hit a golf ball to 94 shooter consistently.

As you’re taking lessons, you might consider asking your instructor his/her opinion on this rather than random strangers who simply tell you what fairways they happen to like.

I say this as if you happen to hit fairway woods like Spaulding Smails, then no Ping, etc. will be able to save you.
