Steelfiber I95CW R flex is the answer in the irons, now the wedges?

Recommended Posts

Acknowledging that my S300 Dynamic Golds were no longer serving me, I've spent the spring trying a lot of different shafts and had that eureka moment with Steelfiber I95CW shafts in R flex in my irons.  Trajectory on the money, dispersion is right, spin rate and carry are there and I picked up the 12-15 yards I had slowly lost as I battled back and wrist injuries and father time the past couple of seasons.

I'm ok with the I95CW in the PW, however I have not found the answer the the 50, 54 and 58 degree wedges I carry.  I've been hesitant to put graphite in my wedges, at least the lighter 95g weight ones.  I've tried a variety of lighter weight steel, DG 105 R flex, KBS 105 R flex, 5.0 Project X, Nippon 1150 R flex,  Modus 105 R.  I've either lost feel (DG 105 and KBS 105 both felt sort of brittle, Project X was ok but I struggled with feel with them on touch type shots, Nippon was terrible.  Just ballooned and spun like crazy and Modus didn't give me the ball flight I was looking for).

Anyone have some graphite suggestions?  Was thinking Steelfiber 110 CW.  Anyone have any experience with these?   Or any other graphite suggestions?

  • CLEVELAND59 changed the title to Steelfiber I95CW R flex is the answer in the irons, now the wedges?

If the lighter weight steel options didn't work out, I'd suggest just staying with the heavier shafts.    I kept the heavier steel DG's in my wedges for almost 10 years after switching to 95 gm graphite shafts in my irons (due to arthritis).

Another possibility to help gain back some of the feel on those touch shots with the lighter shafts in the wedges is to increase the swing weight.  So play around with some lead tape on the heads.

I just went back to the i95 this year in my new irons. I ended with with the i95r this time, I was playing the i95s a few years back but my ball flight was too low. Still adjusting to the regular flex. I have been playing the stock dg115 in my MD5 wedges for the last 2 seasons but this year my elbow is flairing up again so going back to graphite in the wedges too to see if that helps. I had played the i125 in my wedges when I played the i95s and they felt good but I have been enjoying the 115 weight, so I decided to get some FC115 wedge shafts. I will be putting them in next week, but hoping they play close to the 115 I have now but just a little softer tip maybe.

I have played graphite iron shafts for a while know, Recoil ESX 460s which are mid60 weight. I have stayed with the steel shafts in my 50* & 54* wedges. I’ve tried graphite in my 50* and did not like it, but I use my 50* a lot for chipping and the graphite (95gram) feels to light and loses feedback and feel.

Nothing wrong with sticking with steel - but the problem with the lighter shafts could have been with the swing weight.   When the shaft weight gets dropped, some people need to increase the swing weight to get a good fit in the lighter clubs.

Thanks Stuart...I always appreciate your feedback.
The swingweight for the 50* graphite is the same as the original Stella shaft setup at D3, also I used a 95gram shaft when my iron shafts are only in the 65-70gram range. Still searching for the right set for just the 50*.

No problem but you may have misunderstood.   I didn't say head weight might need to be increased to get the same swing weight, I said the swing weight might need to be increased.   If D3 felt too light then try D5 or D6 or whatever it takes to get the feel back.   Just add lead tape to the head incrementally and test out how it feels between increments.   Don't worry about the actual value until you're done.

Now that's not the same as increasing shaft weight, so not saying that's the case for you or not - but that type of testing should be part of the fitting process for shaft weight.    For each shaft weight you test, adjust head weight to get the best feel (not a const swing weight value).  Then you can compare the feel and results of the different shaft weights to make the final choice.

FWIW, I'm not a fan of the i110's in the wedges due to the high balance point (unless you play them overlength - then they're great).  That doesn't mean you'll have the same issue but I'm not the only one.    I think the recoil 110's are a better option for that weight range in graphite but unfortunately they don't make them in R flex.   Same with the SF fc115's which don't have the same balance point issue.   So if you really do fit better into a shaft over 100 gm, you'll probably be best sticking with steel.  Although you could try a stiff flex soft stepped several times (maybe x2-3 times - 8i or 7i shaft in the wedge).
