MacGregor M09 Jumbo LFF: Who Used It?

With all this talk about the revered M09 Jumbo LFF, and considering the recent absurd auction of one selling for nearly $3000, I must ask the geezers: Who used it?  I am old enough to know the big names in the past century, but for now let's assume players from 1950 to 1990, when persimmon was indeed played by great players.  I am thinking of all the big names I know, and I don't think any of them used the M09.  This is what I recall.

 

1. Jack Nicklaus: MacGregor Tommy Armour 945W

2. Greg Norman: MacGregor M43

3. Fred Couples: MacGregor M85

4. Nick Faldo: MacGregor M85

 

If the M09 LFF is the most coveted persimmon driver, which golf legends used it?  I cannot name one.

Nearly $3,000?  How about $3,600 a week ago!  Insane.  But anyway, back to the question at hand.  How about George Bayer?  I know he used a deep face and there are several George Bayer models that are nearly as pretty in my opinion but not nearly as coveted.  I gotta think at some point he wielded an LFF model.  But he's certainly not on par with the other big name Mac guys you listed.

George Bayer used a deep faced driver and there is a coveted model with his name.  Not sure too many used the LFF, you had to be strong and not forgiving I would guess.

Frank Stranahan was the only player to use MacGregor Toney Penna WW Special driver which are the most sought after persimmons. I have 6 LFF drivers in my collection having hit 4 of them and are hard hitting low ball flight without much workability. They are as solid as any driver I’ve ever hit but tour players like drivers with more workability. Also, I am lucky enough to have in my collection 4 945 early ‘53-‘54 drivers ranging from just over 1 1/2” deep to a jumbo 1 7/8” so guys on the tour had deep face drivers in the more popular models. Also lucky to have M85TW and 693 1 7/8” drivers. I have hit both the M85TW and 945W jumbos and they do have more workability.

Man that George Bayer deep face is gorgeous.  The warm brown stain is a beautiful shade.   Very nice indeed.

LFF could be stamped on any MacGregor driver. As to who used the MO9, I cannot recall anyone. When I played in a proam with George Bayer, I recall he had a black  head with a red insert. There was a one and MacGregor on the plate and his stamp on the crown.The year was 1958  or 1959 at Gleneagles in  Lemont, illinois .I think the event was called the “Chicago Open”
