Did one length irons ruin my game?

Recommended Posts

I played one length irons (King F9) all last season - about 80 rounds. In 20 years of golf I’ve never hit it better, even when I played well as a kid.

Because I could not find left handed wedges (anything above 48*) or a 4/5i (anything less than 23*), I sold them at the end of last season.

This year I switched to ping g425’s. Complete confidence, consistency and launch over the 6-7-8. Smash them. But I am struggling immensely with the 4/5 and 9-LW. Long irons thin weak slices, short irons strong pulls. No where close with alignment.

Did I kill my swing with the one length irons last season? Is that...possible or does it make sense? Or is this just an expensive validation that I am a prime candidate for one length?

The proper WRX response is that you need to:   a) buy another set of one-length to test b) get fit and/or lessons c) get a set of blades - the GI irons are the problem d) all

Your problem is, you found out one length works for you, and what is going to change that. Get the Rad Speed and be done with it.

You’d think Canadian golf stores would stock lefty clubs , being as it’s the lefty capital of the golfing world.  That’s just odd that they don’t.

I have a friend that played the F7 one length for about 3 years. He is a casual player, shoots around 90 give or take. He wanted to move to something less "super GI" so he has tried a few different irons (Mizuno Hot Metal, TM SIM, Mavrik) and he couldn't find success with any of them.

Some of it may be mental, but he ended up going to Radspeed one length and things are back to "normal" for him now. As always, a few lessons can never hurt anything but if you find success with one club, stick with it. Best of luck!

How many rounds have you played with the g425's?  Your muscle memory/swing thoughts need to adjust.. give yourself time.  Do you notice any difference between front and back? When I played irons that were different than what I was used to, it was always better on the back but then I never gave myself the time to fully adjust to them.

This statement here says that the one length saved your game.

Just looking at the Cobra website now they show OneLength wedges (56/60) in LH as well as a full complement of irons and hybrids in all kinds of lofts.

I can't comment on stock availability but they certainly exist.

I was scrolling down to type the same thing. The OP's brain & muscle memory just need time to adapt back.

Well there's no way you can swing a set of one-length irons without making changes to your setup and swing compared to a conventional set. Best case, it'll take a little while to reverse those changes.

Worst case, you somehow get derailed and end up with a swing that's neither your original swing or your one-length swing. But given enough time you'll sort out a workable version of that new swing too.

From conversations with friend who's a teaching pro, there's a lot of "swing DNA" that shows up from when a golfer starts as a total beginner right up until in some cases he becomes a very accomplished player. No matter what changes, there's a certain core set of movements and tendencies you'll always make when you swing (whether you like them or not!). I'd suggest always trying to keep that in mind as you work on re-connecting with your own best abilities.

P.S. I hope that last paragraph doesn't sound too much like Bagger Vance/Golf in the Kingdom mystical hoo-doo🤐

Hit it better than ever you say. How hard did you look for LH  wedges and 4/5 irons. They gotta be out there somewhere. If I was hitting if better than ever, better belt I’d looked long and hard. With today’s custom sets and mixed irons sets, I’d come up with something. The TM DHY can be custom ordered up to 2” short. I’m contemplating one for  a 3 iron. Good luck in your search!!

+1 on this. This is exactly what I did when I had my Edel Single Lengths.  Eventually sold them and went back to traditional lengths as I was having gapping issues with the 4i and 5i.
