Why no love for Mizuno wedges?

Adam C

Recommended Posts

Nothing may feel like a Mizuno, but the recent series that had minute traces of Boron felt a bit firmer or different.

I don't think the T20s had Boron - but I myself have not been a fan of the T series (T4, T5, T2) due to feel and shape.  On the other hand, I really liked the S5 and S18, and am a little sad that I sold my S18s.  I Iook forward to the S22 this year and putting them back in the bag.

I loved my MP-T4 set but the DG Spinner shafts were a bit of a turf off for a lot of people, including myself. Many found they flicked the back way up high.

After going to Vokey for the SM6, I'm finding it hard to switch away. There's just so much customization in the Vokey world. That said, I may try Cleveland, TM or Mizzy as I think about replacing my SM6 wedges this year.

I had a set of T-4’s. They felt great, but I still think Vokey has the best range.

Nothing FELT like a Mizuno until they added boron.  Now they feel as bad as they look.

I’ve played many Mizuno irons over the years but one inarguable fact of their design team is that the least experienced, least talented apprentice is the one assigned to the short iron and wedge department.

The T20 series feels a bit different.  I wouldn't say Mizuno wedges are bad.  The T20 felt a bit firm like others have stated.  I had a chance to test one at the local golf store before I ultimately decided to get my Miura 54* from Will Peoples.  Nothing quite feels like a Miura......

I played Miura wedges for 10 years...they are so good.  Then I met Mike T at Artisan...now that's not a fair comparison!

I've heard a lot of great things about Artisan.  Is there anyway to get around their on site testing/fitting policy?  Would love to game at least a wedge of theirs.  I'm all about custom wedges in general.

I love Mizuno, but I mostly play vokey for more options and grinds. Mizuno wedges are nice, feel is great, would have zero problem playing them. I really like the S18's, felt better than the T7 or T20s to me. I still throw the S18 52 in from time to time. Best Mizuno wedges ever were the MP Series from the mid 2000's, they felt exactly like the irons.

At midsize off-course golf shops, Mizuno wedges don't have the rack density of Vokey, Callaway and Cleveland.

At golf course pro shops, I don't see Mizuno wedges "on the rack" unless the pro is sponsored by Mizuno.

I think the other part of this is availability.

I can walk into my PGASS and see 100 vokeys in every color, grind and loft combo, but maybe 15 total Mizuno wedges. I really liked the T20 off the indoor mats, but ultimately they didnt have the lofts and bounce options I needed, and I'm not about to order them and wait when the vokeys did the same job for $10 cheaper.

On a separate note, nobody here talking about the ES21 wedges. I picked up a set to give a try and holy s#it do they SPIN. God awful looking from behind but have to be the softest and easiest wedges I've ever hit....until you try to open the face.

I love my T20 wedges. That said, Mizuno needs to narrow their loft offerings to do away with wedges with gross amounts of offset that some wedges end up with because they’ve been bent strong. Narrowing their loft selection would allow them to offer more grinds which would be another selling feature.

I play Vokey SM6 right now but I absolutely love the T20.  I think it is one of the best out there honestly.  The feel is fantastic, I don't know what people are talking about when they say "firm"... these have to be the softest wedges I have tried yet.  They are consistent in distance and have really nice stopping power without being overly spinny.   Availability is an issue, I went into my local store looking to grab a 52/9 and a 58/8... had neither new, just the 58 used.  Vokey seems to have the wedge department covered but the T20 are really, really good and deserve some recognition.

I gamed MP-T4 for a few years.  Liked the feel of the wedges, but not the DG spinner shaft once I had the chance to hit an S400.

Upgraded to S18s a few years ago.  Agree with what others have said about the boron impacting feel of the wedges.  But my wedge game became more consistent with them, as compared to the MP-T4 or the Cleveland wedges I had prior to that.

I have Vokeys (probably SM5) in my bag up north at my buddy's house.  And I picked up a Vokey Wedgeworks SM7 in 60* last year.  Vokeys are great. But I still play better with the S18s.  Go figure.

That being said,  I just added a Yururi 58* wedge.  Pretty sure its an older model, but the head was pristine.  Looks very similar to the "chili" wedge on TourSpec's page.  Feel was similar to my buddy's Miuras.  🙂

Another fan of the T20.  I thought they felt fantastic!  Really like the shape of the gap wedge.  Have not tried any other high lofted wedges in that range.

I’m also one of the few that actually liked the T7 as well.  Great shape and when hit out of the middle it felt wonderfully soft.  I think some people’s reaction to the T7 feeling firm is missing center contact.  They did feel more firm than anticipated on off center strikes.  Very underrated wedges from Mizuno.

1. Mizuno don't bung the sales staff so no incentive to sell.

2. The average golfer assumes wrongly that buying Vokeys will make them shoot lower scores.

3. Too many players have got used to clicky / harsh feeling wedges and think softer heads are somehow inferior.

4. The blue finish looks camp / cheap.

5. A lack of tour presence.

Because they don't feel like Mizuno irons. I believe it is the boron, but they just don't feel like they should to anyone used to Mizuno irons. I'm a huge fan of Mizuno. I play MP 68's, I own T7's (back up bag) and had a full set of T20's, before selling them after less than 10 rounds. Both the T7's and T20's feel hard and 'clicky' to me. They're not terrible, but you expect the Mizuno 'butta' feel and the recent offerings don't deliver that.

  1. Less availability to demo
  2. Less loft/grind/bounce options
  3. Specific shape (that I like, some don't)
  4. All their lofts are the same length stock. Anyone used to length progression in their wedges will need to custom order and play swing weight roulette.

I'm a Vokey guy now, they meet all my needs and stand up to crazy amounts of wear and tear. My favorite wedge ever was the Mizuno MP T-11...those things were just so sweet to hit and had a fantastic sole grind.

I had the S18s and switched to the T20s. Love both, but the S18 has a bit more of the "mizuno" feel. The T20s are bit clickier feeling, but give me more spin around the greens. I mostly use my 50* within 100 yards.

I played the T head shape for a while and currently play the T20 for my 47 which I love, but I was not a fan of the head shape of the higher lofts compared to Vokeys and haven't been for a while.
