Technically it was called a "dimple" vs a crimp. You can probably still find a shaft dimpler for sale somewhere.

The idea was to create a bump in the shaft to get more of friction fit in addition to the epoxy bond.

So, I can install this without fear of failure?

Yep, should be fine.

Make sure that the shaft is full bottomed out in the hosel though.

I would love a shaft dimpling tool.  I had one back in the day but I have no idea what ever happened to it.

You can use a small nail with the point ground down and a hammer to accomplish the same thing.  As others mentioned, this was done to create more of a mechanical lock against the walls of the hosel.  As long as the dimple doesn't actually deform the shaft too much it will install just fine.

I haven't used one in years.  I have reshafted several sets of irons I have gamed.  I have never had the epoxy bond break between the head and shaft.  I don't think I really need one but I am also a bit old school.  What do you expect from a person who collects persimmon woods.  😁

I'm right there with you.  I used to do this for everything back in the day.  Now I just don't because it's an extra step I have to deal with.

That is a good point, it is a step that isn't necessary these days.  You're right about the extra step.

Get a small block of wood, about 1"x1"x4", and drill a 3/8" hole in the end about 1-1/4" deep. From the side, drill a 1/8" hole about 5/8" from the end.

With a hammer, use either the drill bit or a piece of 1/8" steel rod files to a point.

That's how I used to do it years ago.

Totally unnecessary unless you are the type to use Gorilla glue or similar type of Walmart epoxy.  Use good epoxy and prep properly, sans dimpling, and live happy.
