In your opinion, what makes someone a good golf partner?

What's wrong with both?

I don't like fish. It's kinda fun, but not my thing. It seems both is too hard.

My buddy just bought the last lot on a very nice course, so I told him he has to play now.

My big thing is attitude; that's really all I look for. I played with a random member at my club last week- he mentioned he was a 14 hdcp. and left it at that. Didn't mention or come up with excuses, just hit the ball and knew his ability. Acting your age is like acting your handicap. I had an unreal time. It was a good walk.

My good partner traits include:

Not taking yourself to seriously.
Understand and follow proper etiquette.
Course awareness, meaning hit if you are ready screw who is away, and know when you can hit, if you topped it 80 yards off the tee you will not be hitting you next shot 400 onto the green, swing away.

Enjoy a beer or two on the course.
Know when to stop looking and take a drop.

I'm lucky - my main golf partner and I get along really well. We both enjoy getting paired up with random players or groups. We both love to talk trash, make bets, get drunk, and will compete with anyone when called for it. Both of us are mid-teens handicaps and generally just not great golfers. A few weeks ago we were in a Stableford for some money and I was striking the ball okay, but just getting crazy unlucky bounces. Nothing working. I was like "Dude lets have some shots" and he was like "No we are in this, lets stay sober today." I was shocked to hear him say these words, but we scraped around and won. Then we got absolutely obliterated in the club house bar and our wives had to come get us.

Which brings me to what makes a truly good golf partner, if you are in a committed relationship. Your significant others are aligned in their understanding of your golf addiction, and like each other. My golf partner and I can plan the most exotic of golf trips as long as there is a spa, nice restaurants and other adventures our wives are all in. If you find a golf partner like this, you are a lucky one - like me.

Let me know if you ever need a couple guys to round out a foursome 😜. Sounds pretty similar to my regular partner, although we would have done the shots!!!!

Having just played with someone who brought the vibes waaay down after they didn't start the way they wanted, I promised myself I wouldn't ever get to that point again. If my round is trashed, just enjoy the day. Find something to enjoy

I think it's a severely underrated characteristic.

A good partner is someone who can keep it in play off the tee and use some basic course management besides "driver".

Duff your approach, 4 putt, miss the green, I don't care. But for whatever reason, watching someone consistently knock it in the woods just makes a round unenjoyable.

I think being a good playing partner all comes down to showing situational awareness.

You can play your own game, but your bubble doesn't include just you. It's your entire group.

Be conscious of the pace of the course, the pace of your foursome, and the rhythm of each player's pre-shot routine.

Be conscious of where you're standing and when you should be moving or still, when you should be talking or quiet.

Think about where you leave your clubs, the flagstick, your ball marker and your cart. Try to manage these things in ways that don't impact someone else's shot or cause you to leave gear behind.

Watch your own ball to see where it stops, and do the same for your playing partners when possible. Help the group locate wayward balls.

If you do all of these things without the need for explanation or complaint you'll always be welcome in my foursome.

Lots of great points about personality type etc and those are top of my list.

I don't mind and still have playing with higher handicaps or way lower handicaps, but I have to admit I prefer playing with guys about my own cap the most. It always fun to just play straight up golf.

We've got one guy in our group who swears he can't see his ball off the driver anymore. Dude is in his early 40's so I guess he should be wearing glasses but isn't.

Two things annoy me about it:

  • He only uses white balls when there are a bunch of colors he could probably track better in the air
  • As soon as he makes contact with the ball he turns around IMMEDIATELY and says "WHERE'D THAT GO??"

Dude, you'll never see it if you're not looking for it! And if you're counting on us to track it, please stop interrupting us!!

I have this one guy I play with that would be lucky to break 100, which is absolutely fine. He only started playing maybe 2-3 years ago and he acts like he SHOULD be a single digit, yet he's never taken a lesson, doesn't care to learn on his own and gets so frustrated on the course. It's a very entitled attitude.

Edit: forgot to mention, this guy also does the Hidecki move and lets go of the club on the follow through on a bad shot but actually let's it go. He grazed one of our buddies the other day and didn't even apologize.

On the other end of the spectrum, I have another guy I play with who is the same skill level but he's fully aware of his current capabilities. His expectations and reality are more closely aligned than the first guy and he takes the odd lesson and practices. He's also quick to pick up so he doesn't slow the group down. It makes suuuuuch a huge difference to their playing partners AND to their own performance. They just don't realize it

I golf with a guy like the second one you mentioned and he is maybe one of my fave people to golf with... cant break 100 but brings the best attitude every round and legit cheers for everyone... he is the guy hanging out high fives on every 10 footer you make.. and cleaning your wedges after you hit one close... what he lacks in golf chops.. he makes up for everywhere else
