Is 3-hrs the "sweet spot" for golf regardless of # of holes played?

I think courses/clubs would be well served to be built with loops that could be played as 6-12-18 hole loops and not the traditional 9-18 in all cases.

There's a course just outside of Houston (High Meadow Ranch) set up like that. You come by the clubhouse after #6 and #12. I haven't been there in a long time, so I'm not sure if it has changed, but they never had a 6 or 12 hole rate before, just 18.

My ideal round of golf is 18 holes. Time is only a factor when I’m sitting around and waiting between every shot. If I’m in a 4some and the course is crowded and the round takes 4-4.5 hours, so be it.

3 hrs is pretty fast for 18 holes. I have played rounds that fast many times, even as foursomes...But you are hoofing it a bit.   3:30 is surprisingly easy to do if you are decent players, p

honestly. if you have to be somewhere, golf probably is not for you. it takes time. time to go there. time to practice. time to make up money that you will spend on golf. and probably time to have a s

Well for most players out having a good time with friends, putts will be given, rushed, not looked at from 3 sides, etc, etc...  Once you toss in a couple hundred a man, things will inevitably slow down...

Golfers tend to concentrate harder on all their shots.  Take longer with their pre shot routines.  Take longer to read putts and some will even look at their line from all angles around the green.  It can get really bad.  Seen it before way more times than I care to remember.  Only time I play for money is with my brother.  We bet a dollar a hole and play skins.  Nothing more than what we can afford to lose.  Keeps thing interesting but loose enough that we're still able to finish our round in less than 4 hours even as a four some.  Then you have guys like MJ that play for thousands of dollars.

It's all relative, walking vs riding, weekend vs weekday, 6000 or 7000+ yard course. On a tough 7000 yard course walking as a twosome 4 hours is a good comfortable pace for me, as a foursome its likely  around 4:30.

I dont get irritated by slow play anymore, I expect 5 hours on the weekends, around 4ish weekdays.

If the entire course is waiting between every shot I'm OK with 3.75-4.25 hours.  Thats just what it is.  If there is one group holding up the entire course I won't stand for that at all.

3.5 to 4 is a good pace in my mind.  Probably closer to 3.5.  You’re not running and it’s easily accomplished with a group of good players and no traffic.

that said, if golf is a priority for you as in you’re focused and trying to score then if it takes 4 or 4.5 so be it.  It’s not intended to be a race.

I don’t think pace of play is the issue all the time.   You gotta think all in.  For some people:

- 20 minutes to course

- 40 minute warm up

- 4 hour round

- hour after the round having a few beers

- 20 minutes or more home with later day traffic.

And now you’re looking at a 5.5 hour time commitment which for someone with a spouse and/or kids can be tough.

its not just the pace of play…

Here is my round today, first six holes

Waited on every shot. Decided to play three previous holes to break up the slow play. Left a twosome in cart at a par 3. I  play a par 5, 3, and 4 again. The same twosome finished the par 3 and was just getting ready to tee off on a par 4. Keep in mind, its an open hole , no back ups. Finished the front nine, managed to skip a hole and get ahead of the slow twosome at the turn. I can play slow pace, or fast pace, but there needs to be some kind of pace.

That's been a suggestion from Erik Anders Lang in at least a few videos and podcasts - chunk 18 hole courses out into three loops of 6 holes instead of two loops of 9.

Yeah, a million people suggest it but golf courses are often defined by the land and the shorter routings wouldn't be as popular as you might assume either.

I'm lucky in that my Club is laid out with 6 holes close to the clubhouse. Players can play (1-2-9) or (10-11-18) without crossing under the main road where the rest of the course sits.

So as members we have a lot of options that include 3-, 6-, 9- or 18-hole routes.

That being said, when are you seriously going to make the effort to drive to the course just to play 3-holes? And how often are you going to play 6 random holes instead of just taking on the entire front- or back-9?

FWIW, I never actually end up playing the shorter routings. 3 holes isn't worth it and if I've got time for 6, I've got time for the 9.

12 doesn't take you by the clubhouse.  Just 6 and 18.  And they still don't have a 6, 9 or 12 rate

It's been a while since I've been out there (several years) but I thought I remembered coming by the clubhouse twice mid round. I think you pop by the halfway house behind the driving range between 12 & 13, so you're probably right that you dont technically go by the "clubhouse", but it is 3 loops of 6.

Copied straight from their website:

Built on the spectacular terrain of southwest Montgomery County, the course sits inside the rustic country development of High Meadow Ranch and features a distinctive routing consisting not of two nines, but three six-hole loops. Aptly named the Forest Loop, Pine Barrens Loop and Signature Loop, the six hole routings provide flexibility for quick golf rounds and has made High Meadow a popular local venue for golf leagues and group outings.
