What irons do you think offer the best combination of forgiveness and appearance?

Recommended Posts

I'm planning on going through an iron fitting sometime in the near future. I would say irons are the strongest part of my game, but I'm definitely still in need of at least some margin of forgiveness. That being said, I am looking for something that can provide a decent amount of forgiveness while still providing some good feel and not looking overly chunky. I've been researching a lot of different clubs, and some that have caught my eye are Callaway Apex (or the deep cavity option if I need it), Mizuno jpx hot metals, or some towards the hollow body market like TM p790s. So, any recommendations on irons that look a little bit sleeker but still offer a reasonable amount of forgiveness to seek out and try?

I feel like Srixon is king right now. I've seen tons of good players playing them locally.

My z785 irons are shockingly friendly and the new models look basically identical.

^^^ this. Looks are in the eye of the beholder, but love my ZX7s. I think the ZX5 looks great for a wider sole, but found I hit the ZX7 better. Worth hitting both on grass to see - can even throw the ZX4 into the mix is you want a wide body.

Check out the 623-M irons.  I have them and despite the fact that they are blades, they are really forgiving as they are longer from heel to toe, feel as good as any iron out there IMO and you can't tell me they ain't sexy as hell.  They can be had for under 1k as well even with all the bells and whistles.  Only thing you might consider is that the COG on them is on the lower side so they do tend to launch higher than traditional blades.

Srixon.  Unless you have A problem with the V sole.  I play a combo 585/785, and think this year's look even better. For a good looking game improvement club, I think the ZX5 has got to be at the top of the list.  ZX7 also near the top of players cavity.  But here there are more solid choices.

I'd also like to add that the Miura TC-201, CB-301 and PI-401 are all surprisingly forgiving, feel so soft and buttery like the new level 623-M I mentioned and all look damn good as well.  Very expensive but if you got the dough, then why not?

IMO, nothing will ever top the 714 AP2 for a mix of decent appearance and feel and utterly shockingly ridiculous forgiveness for its size.  It was a true full GI iron in a medium sized 'players' chassis.

If you need something modern, try Srixon ZX5 or Ping i210.

You said you are liking the 921 HM and 790s. Give the Mizuno 921 HMP a look. The Pro HM is right in between the forged and standard HM and I feel one of the best combos of looks and forgiveness. The MP20 MMCs are in a different class. Def less forgiving than the irons you mentioned in your OP. Good luck!

You can’t go wrong really, there’s so many great options out there right now.

My personal top five:

New Level 902 Forged

Mizuno MP-20 MMC

Srixon 785 or ZX7

TM P790

Ping i210

While these are all really good offerings, do yourself a favor and hit them off grass. IMHO, turf interaction is a very important factor that is overlooked often in favor of shaft options.
Srixon vs. Mizuno especially, there’s people who just don’t get along with one, but do great with the other.

To the T100/Apex crowd: I know they exist. Just didn’t make my list.

Ping i210 have a high MOI so they are good for guys that make contact outside the center of the face.  They also have a very dig friendly sole design.  If you are a picker and play off a lot of hardpan they may not be ideal though.

Thinnish topline and little offset but still a thickish sole (forgiveness)

P790

921 HMP

921 Forged noticable thinner sole

Apex (likely most offset)

0311 XP or P (XP may be more than you're wanting)

ZX7 as clean as 921 Forged

You want the most forgiveness in a clean package and save BOAT LOADS OF CASH...

I went from 921 forged/your combo to Srixon ZX5’s and could not be happier. The feel isn’t the best forged feel, but it’s certainly acceptable to me (an admitted “forged snob”), but I shot 3 shots better my first round with them than my best with the e 921’s.  I thought I might combo them with the Zx7’s, and may still at some point, but quite happy with them right now.  They’re just so easy to play well with!

Another vote for srixon! Love my 785’s! But the 585 and ZX5’s are also very impressive looking/feeling!

PXG 0311P Gen 2. I came out of Apex 19s which were good but not close in forgiveness to these. 0311P looks great at setup, is at least a few yards longer and is now on sale for $129/club. (I got them at $120 back in March but still an amazing price for all the tech in these irons. On off center strikes they still want to go straight with minimal distance loss. The Gen 3 and Gen 4 I’m sure are similar but more $$. Trackman numbers for me on Gen 2 were as good as the Gen3.
