Background noise on CBS PGA Championship broadcast.

Anyone else notice the background noise like applause, the ocean, and spectator comments just about drowns out the commentary?  Not really sure why the sound engineer would unbalance the feeds but the commentary barely rises above the background noise.  On the other hand I can hear just about everything the fans are saying loud and clear.

Anything that drowns out Jim Nance is welcome

Unless that noise is Nick Faldo.

"Unbalanced" is the word I was looking for in describing the sound levels.

I thought I was losing my hearing.  Glad to see I wasn't the only one with a sound issue during this broadcast.

Side note:  Do they have to blast music when a commentator is talking?  It's comical when the person talking is forced to raise their voice in order to be heard over blaring trumpets!

I don't mind Faldo, Feherty, or Terry Gannon.

I am of the opinion that the best live coverage is on The Golf Channel.  I'm also of the opinion that the worst coverage is on CBS.

I kinda miss Johnny Miller and his predictions about things after they happened.

Edit:  The thought crossed my mind to just turn the tv volume down and play some Black Sabbath during the broadcast.  I should of acted on it.

Anything would be better than crowd noise ... the only thing I miss about Covid is the lack of golf crowds.

I know what you're saying but it was actually sorta cool given the fans, the ocean, the birds, and being able to hear the players.  If it was just a random who cares tourney, then I'd agree with you.

Maybe your center channel speaker is off or broken, or your receiver is in some weird mode?

I’m pretty sensitive and aware of how things are mixed and I didn’t notice what you’re describing.

I live in NYC. Now that covid gone...

I don’t hear anything from the tv over the fire engines, shootings, blasting music from cars with speakers the size of refrigerators, motorcycles (both Harleys and Ninjas), fireworks and airplanes.

New York is back baby! ❤️

Yes, it was horrible.  It was a bit worse on one of our TVs than the other.   On the bad one, I could hardly hear Dottie.  Hard to believe they could screw it up that badly.

Now they've miked up the cicada noise.  Unbelievable.  Even my wife walked by the TV and commented on how annoying it sounds.  What is the producer thinking????   Do they have anyone who checks the audio on a live monitor?

Cicadas make about 80 decibels of noise and they’re obviously everywhere on the course including on the players. I’m not sure how they’d keep the noise of of the mics.

Occasionally just before they cut to a commercial, you can hear the announcers just fine, and no cicada noise.  So they are purposefully including it as background.

Not necessarily. The on-course mics will be during play, otherwise we wouldn’t ever hear a shot hit. Those are likely muted when they cue the music heading into a break.

Did a little researching and found out CBS hired or to put it better promoted someone to be the new golf producer last year.  The old one resigned in 2020.

Lance Barrow used to be the producer until he retired at the end of 2020. He had been with them for 35 years or so.  The new producer is a guy named Sellers Shy who came up through the ranks working for them.  The CBS broadcasts were getting tired and Shy has brought in some good changes.  They are probably working out the ambient sound issues.
