Lighten up Francis.  It is a Golf forum.  He isn't seeking psychological or parenting advice.  He is looking for his kid to make the golf team.

Given that OP is keeping us apprised of DC area weather reports, drive times to various course, his wife's assessment of D1's charisma and natural talent for software sales, his son's preference for who drives him to lessons, and his son's new friend, to me it seems likely we would have heard about any father-son heart to hearts.

Given the resources he has at his disposal, what proactive steps would you expect the son to make independently of his parents?  Did the father mention or give an indication that the son was doing these things? If the answer is no, then this is partially why I am concerned this goal is being directed by the father and the son is along for the ride out of a sense of obligation or fear of disappointing his father.

"Yall boys stay the hell away from [girls]* before a match. Don't wanna get your wind cut." 

 

*That's not the term he used.

I didn’t make my HS golf team until my senior year even though I had been playing since age 14. When I did make the team I won most of my matches and finished 2nd in the stroke play conference championship. At 18 I beat most of the kids who used to beat me at 15-16.  I think kids mature at different rates. Some are “late bloomers”.
