2021 Bank of Hope LPGA Match Play (May 26 - 30)

Dunno the details but if they laid it out clearly from the beginning that if you quit, then you forfeit, and lose the $ winnings, then Shanshan may have acted differently...

 

As it happened,  every players knew what happens / consequences or lack there of... 

 

Personally, I don't watch much of *playing for 3rd* matches unless it's the Olympics (where a medal / podium is at stake) OR my favorite players (in any sport) are playing for it...

Quite frankly, the tour put this tournament in a not so great spot.  Assuming the schedule returns to historical norms, I like it before the Kia or Phoenix as the first US tournament after the Asia swing.  It would be a good way to let people play themselves into shape.  It is true that all of the players who entered knew where the tournament was on the schedule and the possibility of going 7 rounds.

 

Personally, I'm OK with what she did but don't have a strong feeling either way.  I don't suspect her sponsors are that unhappy, they likely get the situation.  The tour is probably not happy but the truth is these players are independent contractors and the tour kicks you to the curb as soon as you aren't good enough to play, so fend for yourself.  There are some players that truly want to grow the game, give back, etc.  But I'd guess that the vast majority are most concerned about growing their bank account, which is also fine.  You'd see a lot of different things if players were on camera 24 hours a day.

 

I agree that this event is in a bad spot.  Vegas in late May the week before the US Open.  No potential for disaster there.

 

But again, she decided that Jutanagarn was not playing golf that day either.  That's my big biggest beef the more I think about it.  Jutanagarn might have wanted to give her sponsors more exposure.  But that ability was taken away through no decision of her own.

Sponsors care - mostly - about airtime and exposure. Where do you think her sponsors get the most exposure - in the consolation match of an event that has clearly shown they will barely show the players as it is? Or do you think they are better off with her being at full strength for the US Open?

 

Exactly.

 

She was there for 6 matches over those 4 days, its ludicrous to me to think that she should get less money than the ones who didn't make it out of group play.

I tried to watch some of match play, but I can't figure out why many weren't put on the clock.  I had to turn it off and I really like the LPGA!

 

Sunday's title match was not watchable.

7 rounds of grueling match-play over 5 days with 36-holes per day on the weekend is not a recipe for good closing stretches, LOL. 

 

The format was absurd, particularly considering it was "prep" for a major.
