2021 Bank of Hope LPGA Match Play (May 26 - 30)

Are you surprised that her career Solheim Cup Record is 4-4-0, four wins four losses and no ties?

I'd solely attribute it to the Solheim Cup being a team event. Really her singular success in the US Women's Amateur from 2011/12 has no bearing when compared against her SC team match play record.

For an example the great Juli Inkster won 3 consecutive Women's US Amateur events (which FWIW she never gets enough credit for by anybody). Her overall SC record is 15-12-7. Outside of singles it's 9-11-5. DK has only played in 2 SC. 3-3 team play. 1-1 in singles.

Also as I understand there was some recent broken down journeyman PGA Tour player, whose name escapes me at the moment, who went undefeated in 6 consecutive individual USGA competitions but could barely win a team match in the Ryder Cup when he turned pro.

Long winded point at times it's folly to compare a players amateur career to what they've accomplished as a professional. Especially when comparing team events versus an individual competition.

I was amazed at how uncomfortable JYK looked when asked about match-play! Is this the culture of women versus men, or the Koreans/Asians versus occidentals?

In a way, JYK embraces that spirit of the game where it is a self-discipline and struggle for self mastery. But we also embrace golf as a chance to be showy, sledge our opponents a bit, and generally mess around. I am not sure what the right balance is.

And on a similar theme, Ariya claps enthusiastically when Lauren Stephenson holes a putt to halve their match!!! I think I like that overall.

Jin Young Ko's attire on day 1 was quite amazing.

Quick question why did they change all square to tied?

Why was it so important to change that term?

They also got rid of the term 'Dormie'. 'Just an attempt to modernize the terminology for the casual fan I believe.

Should be an interesting day. Several top players have already checked out, with no hope of making the quarter finals. A handful more have to win today, or win and get some help.

Danielle and Lizette should have a good match. Danielle probably has the edge, but Lizette is capable.

Jin Young needs only a tie against Anna to move on.

Sei Young needs to beat Brittany A, and then beat her again in a playoff. Sei Young has looked off for weeks. She won the last LPGA match play event, and should have had an easy go in this group.

Moriya continues her solid play. Minjee can still grab the group title.

Group 9 is the one to watch. 'Love to see a four way playoff.

Definitely love the course. They mentioned yesterday that they can't water the bent grass greens in the heat because it'll scorch them. The 18th is rock hard. The 17th is downright goofy, but it does make for an interesting match play hole.

What replaces dormie now?

Nothing. There is no official term for being in a position where one cannot do worse than a tie. Strange.

The minute I saw her I thought she looked like she had on her "Jammies", with matching socks.  Cute if you're about 2 yrs old, but not a particularly good look for a 20-something.  But....I may be old fashioned ( and I DO realize there are some guys here who have a thing for knee socks.....you know who you are)  🤣

Jason Hamilton on Ji's bag...so does he loop for Lydia at Olympic or is Les Luark returning or another caddie on her bag next week.

Maybe she should hire an Olympic member who is a good golfer who know Olympic well.

Lydia won with local members at the 2012 & 2013 CWO....and a Lake Merced member, Domingo Jojola, who caddied for Lydia at the 2012 USGA Girls Jr ......returned to her bag as a pro in 2014 to win the Swing Skirt at Lake Merced.

Ugh...so many of my favs got beat today and knocked out.

I'll now root for Minjee, Patty and Shin to win.

Although there's the quarters, semi's and final with lots of golf to play...but Kang is looking tough to beat.

I know there's a lot of politics involved.....and with Whan in place...could we see a USWO at Shadow Creek?....would it be too hot in June/July?

The greens are getting baked out....some brown spots today.

I read they had to reroute some waterways/rivers to help water this course....I can't imagine the water involved to keep this course green in Vegas.

Beautiful and tough course, but I don't think the course has enough room for stands to host the USWO or KPMG. It was built as an exclusive getaway for casino high rollers, and not as a possible venue for a major.

Disappointed with the play of many of the top ranked players. Three of the top four seeds out? Hmmm. Really curious how next week's major is influencing play.

Not that it matters because she lost her match, but why wasn't Jennifer penalized for slow play on the 18th? She took over two minutes to play her 2nd shot out of the fairway bunker. Probably closer to 3 minutes. If they're (rightfully) going to assess slow play penalties, they have to be consistent.

Also, why do pros take so long to take relief? My goodness. Stick a tee in the ground, measure a club length, put a 2nd tee in the ground, and drop the ball. The whole procedure should take 30 seconds, not 3 minutes.

Good point.....I was more mesmerized by the course and not looking at the spacing.

They also need space for the production trucks and infrastructure....and how big is the range and practice facilities.

The KPMG and USWO normally don't have huge corporate boxes or grandstands....but with trouble left and right off the fairways and tough areas besides and beyond the greens....not much room for even smallish grandstands.

I also couldn't imagine sitting on a metal grandstand in the 100^F+ baking sun for over 30+ minutes....it might be cooler walking a bit and finding some shade whenever possible.

The toughness of the course...especially in the closing holes with some tough pins makes this course fun the watch.

I see a lot of unfamiliar loops for the lower ranked players...could these be course caddies?

I assume the pros and maybe the caddies are staying in a sectioned off part of the MGM hotel and not allowed to wander out with strict Covid protocols.

It will be interesting to see how many fans are allowed at the USWO next week.

Filial piety explains the stereotype of most East and South East Asian cultures.

"(in Confucianism) the important virtue and primary duty of respect, obedience, and care for one's parents and elderly family members."

In Scandinavia, a similar concept is the Law of Jante.

"It characterises not conforming, doing things out of the ordinary, or being personally ambitious as unworthy and inappropriate."

Can't say we didn't expect it.... My only real contender was Su... And look where that got me? 😂 (JYK, SYK as expected, skeedadled)... Even SYR is gone (though I wouldnt call it tanking for So Yeon lol)

In this thread and in this ESPN article, people are referring to the round of 16 as quarterfinals....  The round of 8 is the quarterfinals, right?  Am I missing something?

Your correct.  8 = Quarterfinals, 4 = Semi Finals, 2 = Finals ... Round of 16 is merely the start of the Knockout phase.

Interesting demise of JYK.

Now please correct me if I wrong. On the 14th hole, in the round-robin match against Ana Nordqvist she threw in the towel. She had a makeable 15 footer foot bogie, while Ana had a missable par putt. Is that the moment to concede? She either doesn't care for match-play, or really miscalculated.

Sorry to be a downer, but this event has been marred by slow play for me. Many offenders!

The coverage is very so-so. They had to tell us about an incredible hole in one, even though it was on a hole they had a camera on. Tom Abbott has the decency to be slightly embarrassed by their lack of coverage, and referred to it in commentary.

I was barracking for Lee6 as usual, and then Minjee. So, that didn't turn out. I think i need medication.
