Underrated courses to play in the DFW area

Recommended Posts

Hey all. All this rain has kept me off the course and dreaming about my next round. I thought it would be interesting to see some takes on the best "underrated" or "under the radar" courses in the DFW area. The first one I will add to the list is Cross Timbers in Azle, NW of Fort Worth. Greens are always in good shape, tree lined fairways with elevation changes, and on the affordable side. What else would you add? Sorry if this has been discuss recently.

Pecan Hollow used to be underrated, the secret has been out since Covid.  Realistically most courses in Dallas are overrated vs underrated

I would say The Bridges in Gunter is underrated. The greens are some of the most consistent and best in the area (if only people would fix their ball marks!). The bunkers have all been re-done. It is a challenging layout with a couple of longer par 3s on the front that are uphill, and shorter par3s on the back that play downhill. A good mix of longer and shorter par 4s and 5s. Greens tend to be large with a lot of undulation. The course held a Monday qualifier for the Korn Ferry tournament and was a local qualifying site for the U.S. Open. The winning scores for the Korn Ferry were a couple of 65s but the tees were up in many cases. The U.S. Open qualifier was basically played from the back tees and Bo Van Pelt was medalist with a 68.

Unfortunately, the course did suffer damage from the big freeze losing some tee boxes altogether and there are some pretty spotty fairways but they have done a great amount of sodding as sod has become available and, again, the greens did not suffer any damage at all. Holes 3, 4, 5, 6, and 13 are still CPO to try to limit further damage. It is quite a ride for some but we joined the course (weekday membership) and play 5 days per week, weather permitting, and are really enjoying it.

Kuddos for The Bridges GC.  Great course - a monster if played from the tips...

BTW, I am planning on driving thru that area next week - anyone have any info on the course's conditioning?

Worried about the last Winter's freeze and how the course has recovered.

Cheers,

TK
