Any other wrxers out there deal with a minor or a full hip labrum tear?

7 years ago, I decided instead of riding my training in the garage during the winter, I would start running... well, I started and after the 3rd or 4th run something did not feel right. I ended up limping home and went to the doc after a few days.

Now, this surgery seems like a nightmare and most have told me to avoid it as long as possible.

Anyone else dealing with this?

I've had a torn labrum, also had major cartilage loss.  After jumping through all the hoops of injections and pt I had a choice between what to do for repair.

I'd advise to research as much as you can.  In my case I came to the conclusion that anything but a hip replacement was a band aid that would still lead to hip replacement in the future.

A hip replacement will have you walking the same day as the surgery, gradually working up to pre surgery activities.  The recovery for a labrum tear surgery was estimated to be 12 weeks on crutches when I was considering it.  I was walking 9 holes carrying a bag at 12 weeks post hip replacement.

I only wanted to do one surgery.  In the past they would recommend putting off joint replacement as long as possible due to the artificial joint wearing out and needing another replacement in the future.  However, the younger you have the surgery the better you will recover and modern replacement components last a long time.

There are videos of hip replacement surgery on youtube.  It's quite a process and watching the surgery calmed me about what to expect.

I'm 68 years old and getting a full replacement of my right hip next month. The surgeon told

me I'll be back riding my mower in 2 weeks and back on the golf course in 6 weeks. I agree

with bekgolf that it's an option you should check out and compare against what you're currently

considering.

Going through the same thing with a labrum tear.  They don't want to do a replacement yet but I said no to the surgery and am working through a series of shots.  The shots help but when they don't I am going to demand replacement as the upside is way better.  Friend of mine 55 yrs young made them replace his and he is doing great and playing golf again with a lot less recovery time than the labrum repair surgery.

I knew something was wrong but had to start with my PCP who did two bursa injections spaced about a month apart.  The next hoop was PT.  Two weeks of PT and I refused to do any more due to the sudden increase in pain.

PT then notified my doctor that I might have a labrum tear.  Next step was seeing a sports doctor who ordered a dye injection mri.  That was followed by the same exact injection except with a steroid a week later.

The sports doctor wanted me to see a highly rated surgeon who performed labrum repair, micro ablation, and hip resurfacing.  All of this just to prolong the need for an eventual hip replacement.

I opted to request a referral to a local orthopedic surgeon who had treated people I knew.  One appointment with him and I scheduled the surgery.

BTW I was 54 when I had the surgery.

No regrets.
