Distance Control Issues with Nippon Modus 120X Shafts?

Recommended Posts

Never had a problem controlling the distance in my irons with DG, Project X or KBS C Tapers, but I decided to try the Modus 120s after hitting one and really liking the feel. First round out and I found myself coming up 10+ yards short on some shots and 10+ yards long on others, even with the short irons. Never had this happen before. Is it just me or do some shafts just not jive with certain swings? For a point of reference I have a very slow tempo, so I usually get along with most shafts.

Your swingweights are build correctly? Had a similar problem when i pulled my shafts from my previus set i200 to my trusty mp53 and had some issues but with some lead tape, end up perfectly. I'm at the other end, i have a very fast transition, loved x100 a c-tapers but hate the px 6.5 and 6.0. The modus 120 is a love or hate shaft

Dispersion is one of the most important fitting aspects and if you are experiencing distance control issues with the same clubs then it sounds like that shaft is not a correct fit for your swing, tempo etc.  Only a launch monitor will diagnose correctly as you need the data to see what the club is doing at impact to establish the cause of the inconsistency.  I.e. inconsistent spin, contact, dynamic loft, lie angle etc. There will be a pattern somewhere.

Unfortunately just because they feel good doesn't mean they will deliver the best results.  You are not alone.  Some shafts feel great over others but I hit the ball all over the place with them.

99% of the the time it's the person swinging the club. I usually try to blame my inconsistencies on a shaft or something else but I'm almost always wrong. It's me.

120x is a pretty loose shaft if you’re coming from say x100 or c taper x.  Try the 125 or 130x if you are. They’re what’s comparable.

what you’re seeing is a spin issue. 120 spins a lot.   But occasionally you may hit a low spin shot that just takes off.  That’s always been my experience with them. I love 130x and loathe 120x.

I have found the 120s to be pretty low spin. They are a butt soft very tip stiff shaft. I am playing them in x flex hard stepped and I am not seeing crazy spin..

I played Modus 120X in some Srixon 765s for a while before I had elbow issues.   When I first got them, I felt like I couldn't hit them at all, I was very inconsistent.  I was coming from 120 C Tapers.  The Modus 120 is a different animal, it loads very differently for me.  After a couple of weeks I was hitting them better, but it took a little time getting used to the profile.

Definitely a release issue imo

Not that your release is wrong, just in those 120s - the release is key

Early/Hold release =10yds shorts

Late/Aggressive/through release =10yds long

Know you described tempo as slow...match that release imo

I spin everything like a top.  It’s not that they are crazy spin.  It’s that they have a wide variance.  I had them in the miura mc501 for a minute snd just cannot get along with them.  I’d see  wedges suck back one time and roll out the next.  Never see that with modus 130.  They always spin.  So maybe that it , they may have been reducing spin for me at times causing the longer shots.

I just saw this..

Modus feels good but 10 yards long, 10 yards short, no Idea how far it will go. They are a spring making company.  I got rid of all mine!

If you take a divot,  the load on the shaft is gone.  If you pick, it stays loaded.

DG and kbs are much more consistent.
