Golf Pride Grips less durable?

Recommended Posts

First off, gonna say I think Golf Pride makes the nicest grips before people saying I’m just hating on them … I use them in all my clubs. However, I’ve noticed as of late that they’re wearing out extremely easily … even my girlfriend mentioned it. We both use the MCC Grips, just curious if anyone else has noticed this?

It has been noticed by many that they are not holding up the same.  To be honest, I noticed this after the MCC+4 came out.  The regular NDMC/MCC grips really seem to wear extremely quick.  I don't know if they changed the whole compound to the new one the +4 uses?

NDMC and MCC have always started showing wear after just 20-30 rounds for me. They are also IMO overpriced and not particularly good w.r.t. slickness.

It's not down to manufacturer, it's down to the specific model. Both Golf Pride and Lamkin (probably others) have some models that hold up as well as any grips ever have and other styles that almost seemed designed to be replaced every 50 rounds.

I’ve noticed this too with the MCC+4.  I switched to the TV+4 and thise have held up well!

Hand lotion, suntan lotion and bug spray are death to the grip compounds.  Same goes with water softeners which is commonly used in many areas.  Made the mistake once of washing my grips in water that had a lot of water softener in it.  Ruined a whole set of full cords.

Same here. I went to a UTx Cord for like a month and was right back to MCC on all 13. I don't play or practice a lot but I clean my grips anytime I do or just when I'm bored and they are all still in great shape.

This is probably similar to how my real rubber garden hoses outlast everything else.

Among the old school grips, I think that Lamkin Crosslines last significantly longer than GP TVs.

MCC Plus 4 are made from a more durable rubber than standard MCC. The real question is this...are you playing more golf than usual? How often do you clean your grips? What grips are you comparing your current grips to?

Certainly less durable than the Gripmaster Roo leather grips… I’ve had a variety of Gripmaster leather grips, some over 15 years old with >200 rounds on them and they are still in great shape.

But as far as cheap rubber grips go, Golf Pride is OK for what they are.

Actually playing less golf than usual. I will say I never clean my grips however so maybe that’s the problem. I habitually clean my irons but never thought cleaning your grips mattered. I’m just comparing them to my old MCC Grips, might go back to Tour Velvets as those lasted forever.

MCC black/white lasted a full two years for me but other colors don’t last that long. I cleaned mine every couple weeks with white wall tire cleaner and a brillow dish pad, scrub them up and down around the grip a few rotations and rinsed with hot water.

You can also use 80 grit sandpaper to remove the oils and film on your grips and then just scrub the grips with soap and water. Rinse them with distilled water until you don't see any soap residue in the rinse water.

It definitely matter for the reasons Socrates mentioned above.

I clean my grips after every single use. Brush, soap, and hot water. Grips will last a LONG time this way, and frankly it has always baffled me how this isn't a more standard thing to do.

I recently made the switch to leather and i don't think I'll be going back any time soon. I like a softer grip and I live in really hot/humid conditions so the grip master kangaroo leather grips sounded perfect for me. I love them so far.

Just remember to give them a good rub with a wet towel to keep them tacky.

if you don’t the oils from your hands can build up on them and make them a little slick.

DO NOT use any chemicals, soaps etc when cleaning them though! Just water 👍
