Does anyone play a straight shot? Should I care if I can't?

Recommended Posts

If I grab a club and without to much thought and just swing it, the ball will draw. I can manipulate my grip into a push fade or a slice. I can't hit the ball straight unless I plan on spending the day flipping from my fade grip.

I have time for a large bucket per week at the range, and 18 on the weekend during spring/summer. Do I work on my draw or burn hours trying to hit it straight?

If you can hit the ball consistently play that. Straight is not the goal,  a predictable shot is.

Play what you have. Don’t overthink it.

I think knowing how to try to zero out face and path is a valuable shot.  No it’s not really perfectly straight. But if you work on learning it , then you’ll understand the fade and  draw better in my

It really depends what you mean by "draw." 😉

Probably also depends on what level player you are as well.

I don't know what exactly constitutes a true draw, ball starts and stays on target line for quite a bit then knuckles down left.

After playing this game for years, I've determined the key to playing good golf is one thing: consistency. Honestly, you don't even need to hit the ball that well to score. It just needs to go to the same place every time. So, with that in mind, don't worry about your shape if it's consistent.

Yep.  Straight might be great but I'd rather be able to confidently eliminate one side of the course.  It makes managing the miss easier, which essentially makes golf more fun.

Nobody ever eliminates 1 side of the course.

Pros miss right and left all the time.

I pretty much hit it straight, it's more of which way it falls but doesn't move much unless it's a mishits. Never tried to chase the straight shot, it just happens.

"...knuckles down left" does not sound good, LOL! 🙂

It depends on what level player you are. If you're a high-handicapper, a controlled hook might justify itself on reliability alone. At that level of golf, there's probably other stuff to polish up before one got too picky about ball-flight. It's not uncommon for older guys to prefer playing what most would consider a controlled-hook for reasons of distance.

Then again, if you're a more skilled player, you obviously don't want to see an unnecessary amount of curvature in your ball-flight as it'll require more compensation in where you aim and probably lead to worse misses on your bad days as curvature is fundamentally the result of a slightly out of neutral impact condition.

It's all sort of common sense. Everything in moderation.

My driver and 3 wood are maybe a 10 yard ( max ) draw. I can draw my Hybrids if I want depending on ball position. But for whatever reason my irons are dead straight, with what I think is the same swing.

I too hit straight naturally these days.  Always accurate and on the shorter side type of player.  But I used to play a repetitive hookish draw for many years when I was younger and clubs and balls were another story to tame.

I used to have a cut or slight fade with my irons and it was repeatable, however this cut usually meant a sliced drive.  That was 8 years ago, as I come back and go through a complete swing change I would prefer straight, but there are too many variables that make a truely straight shot unattainable.

Yep that's me.  I can rely on it every time I go out and tee it up.  Now on my bad day it turns into that ugly hook.  FYI, there is no such thing as a true straight ball.  Every shot will turn either way to what degree depends on the golfer and his/her swing.  I would just stay true to your swing and only curve the ball the other way when you absolutely need to.

But if you work on learning it , then you’ll understand the fade and  draw better in my opinion.  Plus have a 3rd shape to play in case ground spin direction is a major issue for a certain approach shot.

I agree with this, but depending on your shape, it could be holding you back.  I have a tendency to his a hook.  If I'm say 15 yards left or less, I can kind of plan for that and adjust.  When I start hooking approach irons more than that, it's hard to compensate by aim alone.  Too much shape is a problem even if it's a consistent problem.  When you play, play that shot you have.  When you practice, I'd be trying to tone down the path and face to where you have a more manageable shape.
