How much do you spend a year on equipment?

Shanker84

I seem to spend in spurts. The last few years I haven't replaced a club. But then the end of last season I got new wedges. Now this year I bought new irons, a 3 wood, driver and a putter.

Now I'm thinking about another driver and 3 wood.

I don't know a dollar value but less than 1K a year.

Callaway mavrik max 3 & 5 wood

Ping i200 6 - UW

$2350 this year so far and haven’t played a round since 1/26. New SIM2 Max driver and 16.5 fairway wood that was ordered as soon as preorder was offered. Also a set of OL Cobra Rad Speeds that I’ve yet to play due to just coming off an Achilles injury. Been down four months with the Achilles.Have hit one large bucket at the range with the irons and some wedges in the backyard.

2020 was bad for me regarding equipment spending.  Stuck at home, playing more golf, not spending money on other stuff led to me replacing every single club in my bag.  I even sold and bought my old driver on here (then sold it again) and sold and bought the same 5-wood.

Famous last words, but the plan is to keep the bag intact all year. The only club I may change is my 60*.  But I don't very often, so I've had a hard time justifying a CBX2 to match my other wedges.

I hate changing equipment.  I find what works and stay with it, everything in my bag is fitted to me.  Last year I replaced my 54/58 degree wedge, the grooves were pretty much at end of life.  I jumped to the M3 D/3/5 woods a few years back and have no intention on changing those out, nothing I've tested since is a gain.  The irons I got when they came out, which I think were 2012 or 2013.  They replaced Ping Eye 2's which were my first real set of irons I got back in 1993 prior to entering high school.

Year to year it probably averages close to 1k but it spikes and settles depending on the plan for the year.

I'll go 3 years or more before replacing wedges or I will keep a driver for 5 years and then buy a brand new one. This year I replaced all my irons and wedges so it was closer to 2k.

I experiment with putters probably once or twice a year. That is a weakness of mine haha. Sometimes those are free as I'll trade with someone here. Other times like this year I'll buy a 400+ dollar putter I hate and instantly regret. Last year I bought a SIM driver which I love but before that I had a G400 max for a bunch of seasons. My 3 wood and hybrids are close to 10 years old. Once you find a good 3 wood NEVER get rid of it haha.

I play 100+ rounds so golf balls are usually pretty consistent maybe 6 to 10 dozen stock piled up when I find a deal online? I play one ball type just so I know my yardages and how it spins around the greens etc. It might change year to year but not during a tournament season. If I'm playing good I don't lose many but the beat up ones go in my shag bag.

I usually flip clubs here and keep money in my paypal from that so my wife doesnt care too much. I also win a decent amount at our mens nights so I divert that back into the 'golf ball fund' and barely pay for golf balls for the most part.

Some will think its crazy when I tell them about my golf clubs and backup bag etc... Meanwhile I drive a 20 year old pickup and don't have any other expensive hobby. No jet ski or snowmobile or hunting/camping set up or fancy speed boats in my yard haha.

Usually too much. But for the first time I am kind of happy with my bag and not really itching to make any changes (besides wedges).

I tinker a lot and like trying new stuff. I probably spend a thousand a year but also sell off close to that amount. I sell while clubs still have value and in the end I don’t actually spend that much

I try to buy used equipment on the Bay or other sites (except irons)

Or I will wait until a new model comes out and buy the old one

I also try and spread out my purchases

I bought a putter this year and will replace my 5wood and Hybrid next year

My irons I keep for about 5-6 years

I hit my Driver so well that I will keep it until the head falls off.

I try to limit myself to ~$500 a season.  This lets me stay a member at our club and still play a ton and I have bag components on cycles.  For instance this year I replaced my irons....since I didn't get anything new last year I had a $1k to spend on them plus my trade-ins.  Since my irons were a grand, my trade-ins ended up helping me get my SC Fantom X 5.5 and stay on my budget.  Year before last I replaced the top end of my bag going from 910 series driver/fw to 917 series, all either NOS or mint used.  Saved enough getting not quite new stuff but newer than I had, and was able to replace the bag as well.  Next season will be wedges, I play stock wedges whatever last years model was on close out so around $450 for those, I'll likely spring for an extra pair of shoes.  Speaking of which I don't include expendable tackle (ie balls/tees/gloves) or shoes in the $500.  I walk a ton of my rounds, so I grab 2 new pairs of shoes (previous year model close outs of course) over the winter each season.  I've found it's better for me to do this than have sore/tired feet or back pain from bad shoes.

This year I got a spider x brand new for £105, picked up a new rescue dual tp for £60 and will probably replace my sand wedge. So minimal for me. Next year I’ll consider irons and driver though and that’s a biggie.

I really like trying new things out..I usually sell what doesn't work to fund new things though

this year I've purchased zx7, JPX921T, MB101, TC201, a few ventus, few Accra, TSi3 driver, TSi3 3w, Sim2 3w, driving iron, SM8, Zipcore, new putter... writing all that out made me realize I may have a problem...

this is what I do as well. In 2021 I’ve had 2 sets of PXGs, two sets of Srixons, the G425 LST, TSi3, SIM2, SIM2 Ti 3 wood, G425 3 wood, TSi2 and 3 3 wood, Toulon putter, SM8 wedges and two golf bags.

I sell what I decide to move on from but like to try whatever is available. I’m a lefty and live in rural Iowa, so it’s not easy to try new stuff and hitting indoors off a mat does nothing for me. For whatever reason, my swing and results are pretty different indoors.

Ultimately, I would guess my NET spend on equipment per year is $2,000-2,500 but the amount that flows through the account is MUCH higher 😬. My wife has learned to accept it and rarely ever even mentions it these days.

Too much, honestly.

But, I'm pretty settled for now.

Decided to spend my $$ on fixing some of my physical limitations brought on by age and injury.

More stretching and flexibility work.

My net spending (purchases minus selling old equipment) is probably $100 per year on average.  I'll replace my driver and wedges every 3 years or so, and I barely touch the other clubs.  I did spend quite a bit of money recently on training aids and a Shotscope watch since I didn't spend much on golf during the pandemic, but I made a lot of that money back by buying and selling some drivers.

While my spending fluctuates, I may spend around $500. per year, except when  updating irons, every few years. Keep some expenses down with trade ins, keeps the miscellaneous clubs from piling up.

I don't think I've spend a dollar on equipment in at least 3 years. The only new addition to my bag was bought as a gift. I tend to attribute my failures to my swing rather than my clubs, so that's at least partially why. That said, I'm sure I'm leaving something on the course with certain clubs (e.g., driver), so expect to be spending at least $1k this year to round out my bag as I try to get better.

Not much, probably under AUD100, as I sold some items too. Happy to buy second hand to keep the cost down. Could afford to buy new stuff but always find it hard to justify - my game does not improve with new clubs - am at stage where I need to put a lot of practice in to improve.

Having said that, I could use maybe one or wedges (50o and 54o) though must admit that that is so that I can maintain/slightly improve on my 3 different sets ('full" set 12 clubs", 'travel 6 clubs' and 'Ultra Light 4 clubs') without swapping clubs around bags...

at this stage, he just futzes on the edges....so he added older mizzie mp r12 wedges in terrific shape, costs $60....last project was some older rifle fcm iron set shafts $50 and new ferrules and grips $70 and voila, self installed new set of irons!

...the idea of moving off an anser styled putter is always ongoing, but every time he tries out these newer fb type putters, odyssey 7 or ping tyne or tm spider he has been reticent to commit...at some point JP will dive in....

I've averaged a net spend of appx. $500 since 2014 when I started to really get into it, with a spend avg of appx. $1,590 and a sold avg. of appx $1,100.  Might be odd, but I've tracked my equipment purchases dating back to July '14, so I can see what I've tried/kept/still own.
