Tall beginner golfer

I started golfing 3 months ago and I'm about a 25 handicap. I'm currently using my dad's old set of clubs from 2003. I'm 6'1” with shorter arms and those clubs are standard size. I feel like I need to get some lengthened clubs, maybe +1/2"-1", I can't find any full used sets that are lengthened so I'm debating just spending the money to get a full set fitted to me so I can have the correct size? What do y'all recommend?

Get fitted for sure. Unless your arms are significantly short for your height I'd personally try to avoid anything more than 1/2" long. Beyond that there are potential issues with swingweight, and you can start to lose a bit of control, neither of which are going to make it easier for you to improve. There are not many tour pros that play clubs longer than +0.5"

I'll answer and try to help. You might just want to try one iron like the 6 or 7 iron and add 1/2" first. Take it to a club repair place and let them add a 1/2" and see how you like it.

This is a really good idea ...

Until you have a good swing grooved, getting fit doesn't make a lot of sense. Of course, it's hard to get a good swing grooved without the right clubs, so it can be a Catch-22.

I'm 6-5 (currently a 3.4 cap) and have always used and been fitted to standard length clubs, but I have longer arms. It all depends on your swing and your mechanics.

I'm like 6'1-6'2 ish and I always used standard length clubs. One day I decided to go on to the bay and grab a bunch of random clubs and see what I was missing......

I grabbed the following iron lengths in a 6 iron: +1/2", +3/4", +1'', and +2'' and I couldn't agree with 3putts anymore. Longer than +3/4" and it feels like swinging a tire iron. Super long and clunky, no control whatsoever, couldn't find anything but the hosel and/or the ground 5 inches before the ball, and unbelievably heavy.

I will say that +1/2 and +3/4 just feels amazing and like a golf club is supposed to.

I would either sign up for a free fitting from like TaylorMade or Titelist, who travel around to random courses, or walk into a golf store. You can go to either website and see when they're doing one by you.

Both the brand fittings and all big box stores, like PGA Superstore or a Golfers Warehouse, all have tools and shafts that allow you to try things. They just unscrew the shaft from the iron head, like you do a driver, and you can put a longer shaft in it to try.

Simple, GET FITTED.
There's no sense in even talking about it unless you've been sized for clubs.
At the very least consult the PING chart (below) as it should answer the basics, base on your height and wrist-to-floor measurement.

Couldn't agree more.  I have a buddy who is 6'10 (not a typo).  He played with normal clubs about 5 years.  Then arbitrarily added two inches to each club.  He's still never been fitted because of the cost, yet we've spent thousands of dollars on trips, greens fees, etc., over the years.  I would go get fitted wherever it is most cost effective with no obligation to make a purchase.  Once you know about how many inches you need to add and any loft/lie adjustments, you could order direct, which for a beginner would make a lot more sense.  I don't think a beginner necessarily needs an optimized custom shaft, but length and lie will definitely help a non-average sized golfer.

For those that need longer length clubs, it's generally much better to get clubs that came out of the factory at the longer length than it is to try and extend a standard length set.   The main reason for this is head weight and swing weight.   It's not true with all OEM's and head models but many companies do have lighter versions of the heads that can be used for over length builds.  Those keep the swing weight down to a reasonable value with the longer playing lengths.   Simply extending will generally result in clubs that are too heavy for all but the stronger ams (and no adding weight to the grip is not a good solution to that).  On a similar note, what shaft weight might be a good fit can also be effected by the playing lengths - and shaft weight is really the most important thing about being fit to the right shaft.

Take your 6 or 7 iron into a golf shop and have them add an extension. Most shops I know will throw it in for free if you're buying new grips. If it doesn't work, take it back to them and have them cut it out.. lf course your in the cost of 2 regrips... which may or not be a cheaper alternative to buying a used club and extending to test.

GL testing. 🙂
