College Kids and Neck Gaiters

I get it. Lots of after the fact justifications.  Point being at the 2019 NCAAs, no one wore one, and now 1/3 of the players do.  And by the 2022 NCAAs, no one will be wearing one yet again.

I just think it’s a funny trend.  Tiger Woods could wear a top hat and monocle to a tournament and the next year the NCAAs would be overflowing with them.

In 2019 were they required to use face coverings in locker rooms, meeting rooms, etc?

It’s obvious to me that the face covering requirement is what pushed this. Maybe some used previously but nothing like today.

Some find them easier to use than masks. Some may have discovered additional benefits like cooling potential, sun protection, etc. Some may just think they look cool wearing them.

Only time will tell if this trend will continue in the future. Sure, it is likely to be much less of a thing once mask requirements are gone.

I’ve been wearing one in the summer for several years now (long before covid). It keeps the sun off my neck and I don’t have to wear sunscreen (which I very much dislike). Not sure if folks are doing it as a “fashion statement” these days but the benefits of covering your neck are very real.

I wonder what could have happened between the 2019 NCAA tourney, and this years tourney that would have seen an uptick in them? maybe something from the 2020 NCAA's can clue us in...anyone remember what happened then?

It's not so much a trend that tiger started, it was something that a lot of people, golfers and non golfers used as a necessity, and for some it's stayed with them. i know since last year, i've worn gaiters for all of my outdoor activities, (running, golfing, etc) and i think it'll be something i stick with for a while. like others mentioned, it's a lot easier to keep track of a neck gaiter than a face mask when you're out and need to cover up to dash indoors to use a restroom or grab something at the turn.

Previous NCAA tournaments were in locations where the heat was unlikely to be 100+. This year saw temps at 105 in Scottsdale.

The gaiter I used the past year is from Mission - which advertised its cooling properties for years before COVID and had Sergio Garcia as an endorser for this cooling use on the golf course.

My guess is your prime objection isn’t just about fashion fads. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have 2 of them and I'm 40.  Both Nike and they are great for sun protection around the neck area.  Bought them many years ago.  Still going strong without any holes.  Obviously made for warmer weather but work great for the cooler months as well because the fabric is thicker.

Serious question, how do you keep them from slipping down? Face coverings still require at work. I’ve not been able to keep them up.

when i wear a gaiter in place of a mask, i’ll usually pull it up behind my head when i’ve gotta cover my mouth. if one side isn’t way lower than the other, it won’t slip down off your nose as easily.

I have had Buffs as part of my fishing gear for years. Works great in the cold and the heat.

I have used them for golf from time to time pre-2019 as way to keep the sun of my neck and/or on cool mornings. They work well.

The last year I occasionally use one as a face mask - works great in the right situations.

It make perfect sense that this is popular with some people required to have a face mask with them.

Seems awfully presumptuous to say that all college kids "paid no attention to COVID whatsoever." And as others have mentioned, the gaiters have many other uses besides fulfilling the mask requirements. They offer sun protection which is much needed in the desert, and contrary to what most people think they do actually keep you cooler (why do you think people in the Sahara wear pants and long sleeves??).

Plus, I'll take people wearing a neck gaiter at the course over hoodies and joggers 100 times out of 100...

Super necessary in the middle east as sun protection and reducing the amount of dust inhaled while the wind is up.  I used to resist wearing sleeves until recently and they are way cooler than bare exposed skin for sure. I also don't wear shorts on the course and understand the importance of keeping the sun off of your skin in the summertime after spending time in the middle east.  If it is a desert or drier climate you can just pour water on yourself and you'll be bone dry in about 30 mins but the cooling effect is awesome and I am a believer. There is no relief in humid climates because no evaporation is happening so you just gotta deal with being a soggy mess on the course at those times!!

Absolutely. All brimmed hats protect the back and side of your neck when your head is bent at a downward angle.

As is well known.

I went with an Outdoor Cap model that has a wide brim.  I have found it more than adequate for fishing and golf to prevent ears and neck from becoming burnt while not interfering with casting or swinging a club.  Only drawback I have found is if it is windy the brim will flop around a bit despite having a moderately stiff wire in it.

Perhaps not all brimmed hats, but if you were searching for one fit for the purpose, they are out there.

I use mine for sun protection and works well when hot if you soak it depending on the material to cool you down a bit. I'll probably keep using one after all this is over.

One trick I've seen is where you basically take the bottom portion that's behind your head and loop back over the top and back through the gaiter, almost like a pull or drawsting. so it's kinda like knotting the back so you get a little more secure fit.

I am super paranoid about sun damage so I wear sunscreen, really wide brimmed hat, sun sleeves, long slacks, gloves, etc.

But I just could not stick with the neck gaiter. Tried it for 3-4 rounds, quit, tried it a few months later, quit again. The one I have is supposedly high-tech moisture wicking, breathable material but I just get overheated with it on in even moderately warm (mid 80's) temperatures.

So I heavily paint my neck with high-SPF sunscreen, turn up my shirt collar, walk under an umbrella on my push cart and accept that my neck is still going to get brown during high summer.
