Congrats to The ‘dine

Recommended Posts

I am blessed to work at Pepperdine, though not with the golf team. I know several of the players and they are all great guys.

We were rated #1 last year when everything shut down. On top of that we had Sahith Thegala, who is now playing on The Korn Ferry Tour.

Per PGATour.com, Sahith "reached as high as No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Won the 2020 Haskins Award, the Jack Nicklaus Award and the Ben Hogan Award representative of college golf’s top player. Became only the fifth player since the creation of all three awards to sweep collegiate golf’s Player of the Year honors."

Great accomplishment from a private university that has the same problem recruiting as USC with crazy high tuition rates.  Just comparing them against some local Pac12 teams:

Pepperdine: $56,000

USC: $58,000

UCLA (in state): $19,000

UCLA (out of state): $43,000

ASU (IS): $12,000

ASU (OOS): $30,000

Even the most expensive out of state Pac12 school (Cal) is less than both of those.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

Which golf courses do the Pepperdine golf teams use for practice ?

Excellent performance in the finals. Seriously deep team. 2 others who won tournaments were benched. Special shout out to William Mouw, whose father, Billy, is a long time member at our club. First the Walker Cup, now NCAA champions. Hell of a month!

Pepperdine demonstrated they are a worthy National Champion. Very solid from 1 thru 5 and class acts to go with it. Young Mouw was a stone-cold assassin as the anchor man. Joe Highsmith hit some of the best short-game shots and putts I've ever seen.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Sherwood, North Ranch, LACC, Saticoy, Bel Air, Lakeside, El Cab and I’ve seen them at Big V.

Thanks for the information. I remember decades ago when Eddie Merrins served as both the head pro at Bel Air as well as UCLA's golf coach.

College golf is much different now, including coaches becoming more involved with the players games during tournaments. The biggest change is match play format, which I understand allows more teams to be competitive, but  my preference is that the tournaments retained the long tradition of medal play format.

What’s the norm for having coach (or assistant coach) on the bag? I saw some players do, and most of players play alone.

Not a big fan of having coach on the bag. The players need to play and learn.

Collegiate tournaments do not permit caddies. However, during tournament play one designated coach from each team's roster is allowed to offer advise to his players. In the old days the extent of college coaches interacting with players was maybe standing on a par 3 tee box and letting his players know what club others on the team had previously hit, whether shots were coming up short or long etc... However in recent years some coaches have taken to getting in a player's face , reading greens, talking too much  etc..

Two coaches per team. Often times one of the two will walk with a certain player and the other will move around, usually par 3s and par 5s. Maybe follow a player for a couple of holes depending on the situation. I haven’t really seen coaches in anyone’s face or talking too much. Typically they will just talk through a situation with a player.

I know they used to play a lot at Malibou (That is the way it was spelled)Lake GC, but I think it was involved in the Woolsey Fire in 2018 and is now closed.

I've seen players from the women's team several times at Westlake GC. Funny story..One day I was on the range there next to Grace Na (Now on the Symetra Tour) when she was on our team. I knew Grace from her taking some classes in our department. Anyway, she was booming drives well up into the net at the far end of the range. The 101 Freeway is right behind the range. One of the teaching pros walked by and said, "Try to keep them in the range, Grace". I said to the pro, "Why don't you ever tell that to me?" 🙂

Keep in mind that Pepperdine is a private university, as is SC, which explains, though in my mind, does not justify, the much higher cost. Seaver College is actually the name of our undergrad college.

Out of state tuition is higher, as indicated in your example of UCLA. In-state, I am sure is much lower than both us and SC.

My son graduated from Indiana University and we paid about $24k/year in OOS tuition, but that was 10 years ago.

Did Caden Fioroni leave the team? He’s no longer listed on the roster.

I'm not sure. He was a highly-touted freshman from San Diego. If he did leave, I bet he regrets it now 🙂

He has final round US Open qualifying tomorrow at Hilton Head.  My son said he deleted his Pepperdine signing stuff off of IG.
