I see he switched to an armlock.. wonder if Wunder can shine some light here. Not a good sign in my mind.. He could potentially end up like Adam Scott. Beautiful swing but cant ever win because he sucks at putting.

Xander does NOT suck at putting. He is ranked 9th in strokes gained putting right now and has historically been one of the better putters on tour for several years.

It's 100% a wristlock grip.

Agreed. I have tried armlock a few times with different models and never got it fully dialled. Sometimes you roll in 40 footers like it’s a 6 footer other times it’s awkward. I think what people don’t

Saw that.  Xander is one of those guys who will win here and there and have a very consistent career but he's never going to multiple majors or go on a big run.

Just looking for something different I'd expect.

I keep wondering if they're going to try to ban the arm lock as more and more guys go to it...  Get rid of it if they want, just leave my side saddle alone.

One thing that strokes gained doesn’t measure though , is putts made when it matters most. As in under the gun.  I suspect that stability under pressure is his goal.  Dont know if it’s a reachable thing though with equipment change since most of that is between the ears.
If you can hit your intended line , then its becomes a green reading exercise.  If you can read it correctly , then hit the line , all that’s left is speed. And that partially goes with reading it as there’s alwasy 2-3lines that will go in with different speed.  I suspect he’s like anyone else , and trust issues are the problem.  That and accepting that they all won’t fall.  No matter what.  Armlock won’t help a guy who’s already hitting his line without a yip.  I know. I’ve tried it thrice.

Yea. That’s not a huge departure from how he already putted.

Interesting. I've heard mixed reviews on that Superstroke armlock putter grip. I've wanted to try it but didn't want to mess with the loft of the putter to compensate. Another issue is that I putt left-hand low, and I wondered if that would be a problem with locking the longer grip. But Xander definitely found a way to make that work.

I putt traditional but the wrist lock felt better left hand low to me, so it’s worth trying

It is just strange that there really isnt any young gun that is a great putter. Rahm seems to be the best but is not awesome. The rest are all top notch ball strikers but a bit balky on the green.

He seems like another version of Tony Finau. Always a favorite, always in the mix, lots of top tens but does not seem to close the deal..

Big grips , and mallets.  Kills feel. Putting is all feel.

disclaimer **** this is my opinion 😂***

Fowler Reed Spieth - all feel putters.  Most consider them great putters.  Although Rick has to work to erase his poor putting recently with that mallet.

kevin Na is another excellent putter.  And there are exceptions like Kisner .... but it’s rare.

Agreed, I believe he already gripped down a few inches on the old SS grip. Seems they just extended the shaft by 2" and then threw the WristLock grip on there.

I've messed around with an old Odyssey #1 belly putter that was bent to be an armlock, it just seems a bit strange to me to do it left hand low, my left wrist really bows out due to the shaft angle, but that is how I've been putting now for a few years.   It's weird, a regular right hand low on a standard putter feels strange to me now, but with an armlock, feels OK.

I play now and then with a guy who putts left hand low, and last week he showed up with an anrmlock, he putted lights out over the weekend LHL and armlock....  and he did it with two different putters, first day was a Bettinardi and the next round was a Scotty Cameron custom.

I will say the grip he is using makes sense to me for this method. Fill the gap so that you can hold it with less tension in your hands and wrist. You also do not need to have the loft adjusted so much.

I think you mean you DON’t need to adjust loft so much. This putter looks longer than what he was using in April, but not by a lot. Someone above said 2 inches longer and that looks about right. I do think this particular grip works well for an armlock style with a left hand low or prayer grip style. Here is Xander two months ago...

 Xander doesn't suck at putting!
He has a very specific fault that he and I share when we lack confidence.
He stands over a putt way to long before finally pulling the trigger.
I believe he has too much going on between the ears just before making his stroke.

Just my 2cents with experience.

He does not suck at putting where did you get this? His chipping is average and he leaves himself with way too many 7-10 foot par putts.

Per the recent interview with him, his weakness tends to be around the greens/chipping which results in a lot more 7-10 footers than he should be having (by his standards). If those become a little balky under pressure, like @bladehunter said, then this could be an effort to help with that.

It really does. I have one on my 2 ball putter and after I extended my shaft by 5", I only needed to adjust the headweight on the putter. The putter is standard loft and lie, and rolls the ball beautifully. The huge pistol grip out the side of this grip really allows for a neutral shaft lean setup.
