High Swing Speed Player - Need Lower Spin Driver

KingTitus

Recommended Posts

Currently gaming a TSi3 9 degree set to 8.25 with a Ventus Black 6x. Typical angle of attack is 4-5 degrees up with a natural club path. Swing speed on GCQuad is 120-124. At the moment I'm averaging a launch angle between 12.5-13.5 but spinning well over 3k. Average spin is usually between 3200-3500 which means I'm losing massive amounts of yards due to it.

Any suggestions on a lower spinning head? Would most likely switch to a Ventus Black 7x with the new head to get a bit more feel and control over the club head.

120-124 ss.. that is fricken fast

Whats your carry ?

Carry is averaging 290-300. I know I shouldn't be complaining but I hate knowing I'm giving up a good 15-20 yards of carry distance easily.

TSi4 8 degree will spin less. Have you tried getting your spin down with your current driver? 3k+ spin is pretty high

Timely post - I’ve got the same head/shaft combo and seeing the same numbers as you but with a SS around 115mph.

I’ll be hitting my backup SIM2 with Smoke Black RDX on a Trackman tonight - hoping to see how that plays out.

Looking at SIM2 or even Mizuno ST-Z as an option. Would love to know what your numbers come out to.

Heard the TSi4 is not forgiving at all, which I'd like to stay away from. I've messed with swing weight, loft/lie and nothing seems to get the numbers down. I occasionally will get 1-2 shots on quad below 2400 but those are so few and far between.

weird 4-5 up with that much spin?

where is the contact on the face?

I swing around the same TSI3 8* (7.25) ventus black tipped 1" I am seeing 2400-2600 (playable spin) but I also launch it few degrees higher than you (also this is on trackman indoors so dont know if accurate lol)

Contact on face is usually just high of center. Miss is usually slightly off the toe.  Here is an example from a shot on quad:

I'm at 118 and I'm around 295 carry average with 175 ball speed for reference so yes, you are leaving some yards on the table.  At that ss you should be carrying it 310 ish and your ball speed should be high 170's.  I have the Ventus Black 7x as my gamer and it was one of the lowest spinning shafts for me.  Changing the head is going to affect spin rates more so than changing shafts which is also why I went with a 8 degree head.  The original SIM is a pretty low spin head.  I believe it spins less than the TSi3.  The TSi4 is def a lower spinning head as well and something you may want to look into if you are dead set on Titleist.

Yeah, I know I'm leaving a lot on the table. I'm leaning toward a SIM2 8 degree with Ventus 7x tipped 1" but wanted to see if anyone else had other suggestions. I know the Mizuno ST-Z is a low spinner and pretty hot off the face. Just won the TXG driver bracket.

I have that exact same set up you're thinking of.  Spin is 2000 to 2400 rpm for me.  Can't really comment on the ST-Z since I haven't tested it yet.  If all else fails you could always try a shaft with even less kick than the Ventus Black.  AV raw white proto 2.0, PX hulk green, Accra RPG Tour Z, etc.

I've heard the same thing about this head - what's been your experience?

-Thanks, Todd

Its very draw bias, so be aware of that, if you dont need that then maybe the regular triple diamond is for you. I HATED the regular Epic Speed series, including the MAX LS. Never really like a callaway driver period. But this Triple Diamond LS helped me out a ton. I need the draw bias, so thats a personal point, but its also a lot more than that. The slightly smaller head profile is nice for a little more control, the club is super forgiving on the high end of the face, and the sound is just about perfect. With my correct shaft in it, I have so much confidence stepping up to the teebox. And I tested and played on course with Rad xB, SIM2, STZ, and TSi3.... this one takes the cake and its not even close FOR ME

A draw bias would be ideal for me. My typical flight for all clubs is a small draw but with the TSi3, its been a fade. Hard swapping back and forth with shot shapes out there. How did the SIM2 perform for you? I've seen thats a fade bias as well.

SIM2 was very fast and very long for me. Those two stats beat out every other driver. But... I couldn't hit the thing straight. I have actually thought about messing around with a MAX D... but after I got this Triple Diamond I stopped messing around. This head is unreal.

Not really all that weird, actually it's pretty common since a lot of ams increase their dynamic loft when they increase the AoA.   Higher AoA is only really beneficial if one can increase AoA without increasing the dynamic loft.    The OP might actually be better off not hitting it up so much - but only some testing will tell if that's the case.

But the solution is to reduce the dynamic loft - either through reducing the head loft (will likely only help a little bit based on the fact that he's already using a 9* head) or through the swing (possibly including setup and/or tee height).

Thoughts based on the below. This is a good average of my numbers.

Your swing numbers seem good so you just need to get the club dialed in. Would consider tipping your shaft (will get you a little reduction) and try to get a head so the loft is in the 6-7 range. It seems low but since you have a positive angle of attack you should end up with a launch around 11-13.

Thinking an 8 degree head that I can drop down to 6-7 and go with a ventus 7x tipped an inch.

In terms of purely obtaining low spin, the Callaway low spin offerings are going to be a solid choice. But you should do a proper fitting to ensure that you are maximizing results. And someone earlier mentioned face contact . . . given the numbers, I would not be surprised if you are a bit off on contact (possibly low on the face). I would try to get on a trackman to assess where on the face you are making contact.
