1950-1953 MacGregor M65 Senior Flex

There's a set in really great shape for 50 bucks locally 2-wedge + putter.  I'm intrigued but turned off by the flex.

How are those M65 Senior Shafts?  Anyone have experience?

I have a set of M65 Colokrom. Sold to me as M85 and it was only when they arrived I thought the shaft/ferrules looked odd -noticeably thinner than standard. It took a magnifying glass to realise they were M65 rather than M85!

Play wise, it depends on your normal shaft preference - if you play stiff you will notice a big difference and struggle. If you are a regular guy then just ease back a bit and you will be fine.

I didn't return mine, they are in great nick and give me a couple of years they will be perfect for me!🤣

was your goal to get stiffs or regulars?

IIRC, you post a bunch of stiff vintage gear.

It’s mostly vintage regular which we all know is stiff by today’s standards.  I have a few stiff vintages but nothing with a senior flex.  I’ve never come across one locally until these popped up.

M65 was meant for senior or women market. The heads were smaller than M75 or M85. Lighter shafts , shorter length, and different grips. They were top of the line. If the heads were reshafted with today’s length , they would not be easy to swing in my opinion.  If left as designed, they would be wonderful for ladies or senior men

Hi charley-  would you say the same about the persimmon m65 line?  I always loved the BWB inserts.  I have a set in original condition and was thinking about having them refinished to hit.

Thanks Charley.  I did not realize the heads were smaller as well.  I think I will certainly pass on them now.

based on Charley Penna's comments,  the smaller heads, shorter length and soft shafts don't sound like a favorable combination - for you.

Totally agree.   If anyone here wants them I’m happy to share the Facebook market place link in private.

I'm finding this thread very interesting.  So the M65 heads are smaller and I would assume lighter?  As a tall player with a 39-40" wrist-to-floor measurement I need lighter heads to end up with a decent swingweight if I want to go longer in the shaft - which I do.  I also prefer very small head profiles so maybe the M65 would make the ultimate blade for me.  Hmmmm....

I'd be interested in actually comparing them to M75s or M85s to see the difference in head size.

If you are interested I can put you in touch with the person who has them for sale.  Or if you aren't in the area I'm happy to grab em for you and ship em out to you!

I do like how you have broken down your style to fit into something vintage!  That's half the fun of this!

Hey thanks for the offer!  I'm only just conceptualizing at this point though so I don't think I want to do anything concrete just yet but thanks anyway.  I do like the idea of this though and I'm going to put some more thought into it.  I'm not like the average golfer in that the smaller the head size the more confident I feel over the ball.  I really don't know why and I'm sure it doesn't help my game but tiny little blades really appeal to me and big "game improvement" irons really throw me off - especially the offset.

tne clubs would need to have the lies and lofts changed. They were designed for ladies or senior men. The playability would be destroyed. There are irons designed to fit taller players in the MacGregor line in that era

Thanks for the input Charley - much appreciated.  I hear you on the playability level being altered but do you really think it would be destroyed?   I'm only really talking about longer and stiffer shafts.  Probably loft and lie adjustments too and maybe even a bit of a regrind on the sole for more bounce and a softer leading edge.  For the cost input it sounds like a fun experiment!  😆

I guess what I'm really after is a smaller and lighter than normal blade head in a cool vintage look to build upon.

Maybe it would "destroy" them from their original purpose?

One could argue Johnny Miller destroyed his 1945 Tommy Armours for is 63 in '73.
