Putter length

I'll sometimes use a 36" putter and I use that cause I'm tall and sometimes like a more upright stance when putting. But for me stock length is usually 35" which I find a happy medium.

I mean it could, or it could be the putter you're using. A long putter could put you into a better position, just look at Jason Kokrak and the recent success he's had with a longer putter. The best way to honestly see that is in a fitting because Quintic can pick up all that better than the human eye.

6'2", using 35.5". I used to game 35" a few years back and my starting line is always right. Then I tried a 37" putter for a while, which went "well". And later I just found out that it's not solely on the length, it's about lie angle, because with a putter around 35" I can aim my putter well and not losing control, but because of the standard 70 degree lie angle my starting line is always off. Although the 37" putter has the correct lie angle, the length makes the putter head way to heavy and head is all over the place and my stance is off by a mile. So now I just have my putter bend to 74 with a 35.5" putter and it works very well.

I’m 6’3” and used a 35 inch putter for over 50 years. Now that I’m older and have back issues, I found bending over to use that length was uncomfortable. When I replaced the grip last year, I had them add an extra inch to the club. I’m a lot more comfortable now. I set the club so the sole is flat on the putting surface and grip it from there so I adjusted to the lie of the club. My putting has never been better.

Who uses putter length greater than 35 and what length and why?

Long putters aside, back when I was a kid I used a 33" putter for many years, and then transitioned into a 34" putter as I grew to be over 6-foot tall.
That was my go-to length for decades, until I got older - and noticed back pain (from leaning over for extended periods) during practice sessions. Went to a 35" putter and it relieved some pain, but while I dabbled briefly with a 36"+ putter, I found it required me to stand very erect, or the putter to be in more of a toe-up position (and too far away from my feet at set-up) and/or a major lie angle adjustment which would result in most hosels breaking to make it impractical.

I'm sure it works for some, just not for me.

I've played 37", 36.5", 36" and these lengths promote a very comfortable, technically sound address technique. However I seem to roll the ball best and make the most putts playing a 34.5" to 35" putter.

I’m 6’5 and tried a 36” putter a few seasons ago. Felt more comfortable but putter worse with it so went back to 35”. Definitely putt better without the extra length.

I own a 36" Bullseye (pre-Cameron) and an OG Ping Anser (early 70's) that are both 36". I don't actually like putting with them because I have to stand up really tall which produces less of a "square to the path" pendulum stroke.

That said, I have occasionally taken one out of the closet for a couple solo/practice rounds just to break out of a bad putting spell. Standing taller, letting the club swing open and closed (almost mimics hitting a draw with an iron) and just generally doing everything differently can be refreshing. I can't actually make putts worth a darn like that but it's a great change of mindset.

From August 18, 2021 I will be away from GolfWRX for a while.

As others have said / tried above: I’m 6’2 or 6’3 and have tried 36” in order to stand more upright at address; mainly an attempt to be able to ‘see’ the line a little clearer.

All that part was great. Unfortunately with that length - I then putted like Grandma…..

So now it’s 34.5” for me all the way.

This is me....RH, left eye dominant. Used 34-35" all my life then a few years ago went with CB 38" in putters. Settled on 35 in CB putter, seems to roll the best.

5’11” I now use a 35.5” putter. 25 years ago I used a 33” putter. Then went to a 34 5 or 6 years later, and used that length until this year, and my back is thanking me for it. I am RH and L eye dominant. Normally a very good putter but if I do get off track I will pull putts for a day until I resolve the outside takeaway.

One benefit to the extra length is long putts are easier - not needing to hammer the ball so much.

I know this doesn't really answer the OP's question but I play a 33.5

I used to play a 34 and going just a 1/2 inch shorter ended up being a great move for me.

Putter length is more about arm length and not about height.  Some of the tallest golfers play really short putters because their arms are so darn long.
