Iron help - don't know where to go.

Recommended Posts

over the last three rounds I have missed 5 fairways, but only hit 8 greens in reg. I feel so nervous over any iron shot and have a million things going through my head and just cant make a swing. With a driver or wood, I feel so confident, can hit high, low draw or fade,  I love hitting woods. But with an iron everything is so jerky and robotic. I don't know if I need a shrink or some lessons.

I just wanted to let off a bit of steam, but if anyone has any ideas that would be great 🙂

Are there irons you feel more confident with than others. E.g. 9-iron over 5-iron?

not really, if it's short I'm scared I'll shank it, if it's long I'm worried I'll push it a mile right.

I feel your pain, fellow golfer. I too have always had trouble with irons. Weakest part of my game by a mile. I'm always accurate except for the occasional over draw, but have always struggled with thins and fats. Finding and maintaining a consistent low point is a struggle. But, if I can get solid contact, distance and direction are generally good.

I've recently been working a bit on weight distribution and body position to hopefully tighten things up.

There’s a reason most tour players have a swing coach.

that is very true.

yep, it would be great to be able to get a regular swing coach to check out my swing, unfortunately I live a part of the world where good coaches are hard to find, and those that are available are very expensive.

onwards and upwards though !

I too have the utmost confidence in my woods and strangely enough, my UDI.  Everything else is a bit squirrely until I get to my wedges.  I reached out to my teaching pro recently and he gave me great advice.  Been going to him ever since I was 26, now 40.  He told me to swing more up and down with irons and more round with my longer clubs.  My swing tends to be more round anyways.  It all clicked.  I'm working really hard implementing the changes.  I've hit some good ones and not so good ones on the range.  For you though, besides mechanics, it may also be a mental block.

Interesting topic, at least for me 😆

The PGA average for GIR’s is about 11 1/2 per round. 8 is actually a very good number for a decent amateur. The main statistical difference is the ability to get up and down. Their recovery proximity to the hole is wildly better, as is the number of 3 putts.

IMO the major difference between swinging a driver/wood and an iron is timing and synchronization.
Example - hold your 3 wood directly out in front of you with the shaft parallel to the ground (and keep it parallel through the swing). First, swing back, allowing your hips to turn with the club, then swing slowly, so you can see the club head position, with your lower body in sync with your arms. Next, repeat while not allowing your hips to turn at all. Finally, turn back in sync, but only swing with your arms. What you’ll likely notice is that at this “zero angle” swing path, the club head will return to the address/impact position regardless of your body position. As long as you maintain balance, you likely hit a decent shot.

With an iron, you just can’t do that. The greater the vertical component, as Mr. @phizzy30 alluded to, the greater your body’s rotational angle defines the club’s face position at impact. By practicing overly with driver, and not concentrating on rotation and synchronization, what you’re experiencing is pretty much inevitable.

Sucks amigo.... no teachers nearby and others are expensive.

You say your jerky and robotic... that's not a good mix.  Post a video (not in slow motion) here lots of great teachers/players to help.  Better then nothing and free lol!

Try and be the opposite of jerky/robotic.  You obviously play a wood well so hope aint lost.  Until you find a real solution go range and play a wedge and get your body soft and soft grip and hit easy shots 60-80 yards only.  Be smooth/fluid and not jerky and imitate a pros tempo you like and make it super buttery and work up to longer irons....

Good luck bro man!

If you're scared and worried before even setting the club in motion see a shrink.  Until your first appointment why not teach yourself your own lesson by learning how produce shanks and pushes on purpose.  I think I recall seeing a Monte video where he was dropping some good shanks out there.   Study what he did to produce those beauties and then don't do that.  It's really that simple.

Just the other day a friend, who has been topping fairway woods way too frequently, asked for some thoughts and I suggested learning how to top on purpose.  I proceeded to show him some real topped beauties if I do say so myself, and even told him how to produce them.   He said that's fine, but how is it applied.   My response was don't do that and you are guaranteed not to top, problem solved.

Leaning from bad can be good.

I think it might have been a Reinmuth or Hebron story but it involved walking up a steep hill.  If you suddenly found yourself on the ground from a fall and had no idea how you fell you might be scared or worried about going up the hill again.  If you knew how you fell then you would walk with confidence because you won't do that again.

it's 8 over 3 rounds 😉

if I have a driver or any wood in my hand, I'm just target focused, and don't think about technique because I trust it. But with an iron I just don't trust the technique so I'm always looking for positions etc instead of being target focused.

The simple advice is often the best advice.

I get the same issues, under pressure I find it harder to overcome my swing tendencies.

I suspect I do too much technical practice and not enough games & pressure training, maybe you're the same @i*windows?

thanks all, good advice all round!

I also found this which sort of encapsulates everything that people have said, the first few minutes are great.
