Reshafting/Resetting Lie vs. New Clubs

I'm in sort of a strange position, thought I'd ask the experts about my options.

I have a set of Callaway Mavriks (4-9,PW,AW) that I purchased new from Callaway last year. For some reason (well, actually, there is a reason, I'm a dummy) I ordered them adjusted incorrectly, and it turns out I need the lies flattened 2 degrees and the shafts lengthened 1.5". The clubs are in good condition, did not use them much, so I thought I'd go to my local clubfitter (has a good technical reputation although the staff ranges from being mildly impolite to just being a**holes), they told me they would only bend those clubs 1 degree flatter, no half degree and no more than 1 degree. I realize they don't know what the clubs have been through and have to be careful with cast clubs.

Callaway, however, DOES offer a reshafting service and I COULD send them back there. I need to call them to get a price, of course, but my plan would be to let Callaway flatten the lies 2 degrees and just have them put in new shafts of the correct length, I'd probably rather not have the shafts extended.

I have basically two questions:  First, if cast clubs can be difficult to bend (I know there are varying opinions on this) why can Callaway offer that service (when you order you can have the lies bent up to 3 degrees either way, IIRC)? I know it sounds like a silly question, after all they are the manufacturer, but do they have a proprietary process or when you order do they cast the clubs in those lies? Second, and of course this depends on the price, does it make sense to send them back to do all the work or trade them in (I think it's $480) and get a new set? IOW, would there be any difference between ordering a new set of Mavriks vs. just sending them back for all this work to be done? Just in case it makes a difference, I might actually be able to garner $720 on the trade-in from a particular clubfitter/vendor (authorized Callaway), but that hasn't yet been confirmed.

BTW, I'm a lousy golfer but I love the game and I love buying things. 🙂

Harry Redknapp on signing good-looking Portuguese winger Dani, he told reporters:

"My missus fancies him. Even I don't know whether to play him or f**k him."

Two degrees should be no problem to bend, especially if Callaway is doing it.  I imagine getting them reshafted will save you quite a bit of money over buying a new set.  And with the new shafts and correct lie angles, they will still be like a new set to you.  Give Callaway a call tomorrow and see what they can do for you.

If they (your local "clubfitter' )can't bend a club 2º flatter they have no business being in the business.  It's that simple.

The other question is how you could make a mistake of 1.5" in length?

I'll strongly disagree here... I work at Galaxy by my house in the mornings and the stuff people bring in, and the requests they have, and the condition of the clubs, and not knowing the history of the clubs, it is absolutely the right decision to play it safe and not have to deal with uneducated, in some cases rude people and requests.

And as you know, things do break even when you are careful and now you are responsible for that club... No wait, you are responsible for the whole set!

Find out what everything would cost, bending and reshafting, and price out a new set. I've never had a request to send clubs back to Callaway for bending or reshafting. I know Mizuno has a great deal on reshafting at least they did before covid.

Also, keep in mind new orders could be months if you order something that is backordered.

You have to adhere to Galaxy's policies.  Doesn't mean they are correct.

I've been bending and repairing clubs for 30+ years and have seen every piece of stupidity one can imagine and many that defy logic as well.  There are some clubs that I won't bend (some of the old Adams, some newer TM) but taking a stock set of Callaway heads and bending them 2º flat, it doesn't get any easier than than.  Having a blanket policy about bending just doesn't work.  Every item needs to be examined on it's own merit and a determination made about what can be done.

Answers to 1 & 2 will vary per person.  Some clubs are better bent by the OEM, than others.  Their bending equipment tends to be better than what average Joe club builder has.  Plus, if the OEM damages the equipment they replace it.  YOU, the owner accepts responsibility for when a garage club builder damages your club in the process.  Very few of them replace the club.

My club builder does all my loft and lie adjustments on irons, but not Titleist 718 T-MB 2 iron.  I send it back to Titleist for bending adjustments.  Lots of builders say they can do it, no problem, except I don't trust them.  If they break it, replacing that 2 iron is not easy.  If Titleist breaks it, they will find a replacement.  Most OEM's handle adjustments, the same.
