Cashen course at Ballybunion

Would like some feedback from fellow wrx’ers who have played the Cashen course. I’ve read reviews, and they vary from “tricked up” and unplayable to most fun I’ve ever had. Our group is already playing the Old Course in the morning, but I’m thinking about getting an afternoon time on the Cashen  and playing a Bramble format. Any thoughts?

I played both courses at Ballybunion and had an enjoyable round at Cashen. Many holes cut out of the dunes…I would play it…

If you are there it is worth playing-if for no other reason being able to weigh in on the love it or hate it debate.

 

It does have some blind shots and calls for some specific placement of your shot that is not obvious the first time you play the course - local knowledge is needed. We lucked out and happen to have on one of the Pro's join us- it helped immensely and eliminated any frustration. Given this I enjoyed the course. Maybe make sure you get a yardage book - or study the hole by hole flyover and make few notes before you play. Or you could grab a caddie. I would not go into the round blind.

I would treat Cashen as a goof around PM game with a cart and some beers if there is a 36 hole deal. The design really asks too much of most golfers given the harsh terrain. It's extremely easy to lose balls from shots you think are fine. However, there are many cool shots in a lovely setting.

That’s the plan. Just play each foursome against each other in a shamble format taking one score. One of the comments a local told me was that it is the worst designed golf course on the best piece of land in Ireland. Just looking at the pics, it looks like the topography is amazing.

Cashen is a course where spending  the $ for a caddy is totally justified.

Shamble is a perfect format for the course.  Especially in the afternoon if the wind picks up.

Thanks. Most in our group enjoy a tough challenge, but I’ve heard there are some holes that border on ridiculous. So I’m thinking doing a match play foursome vs foursome only using one ball per group should be pretty fun regardless of how hard it may be playing. Our group is six low single digit guys and two 12 hdcps, so I think the guys will enjoy it. We will just take a caddie for each group to help with lines.

Yeah, after 18 on the Old Course in the morning, we will be riding for the Cashen round.

It's been a few years since I was at Ballybunion but they didn't have alot of carts so plan ahead.
